Job summary

UHC United Hospital Center is seeking a Sterile Processing team member to support decontamination, cleaning, and sterilization of surgical instruments. The role includes handling decontamination equipment, verifying instrument sterility, and maintaining records in a fast-paced environment.

Candidates should have a high school diploma or equivalent, and sterile processing certification is preferred. Prior sterile processing experience is beneficial for joining our centralized team.

Qualifications

• Must have HS diploma or equivalent.
• Preferred certification in sterile processing.
• Experience in sterile processing preferred.
• Ability to learn and follow infection control procedures.

Responsibilities

• Retrieve contaminated instruments and deliver sterile instruments where needed.
• Manually clean instrument debris.
• Operate and maintain decontamination equipment.
• Inspect instruments and equipment for safety.
• Test and report equipment problems.
• Track items through cleaning and sterilization process.
• Remove waste from transfer carts.
• Organize, store, and record sterile supplies.
• Check expiration dates on supplies.
• Maintain clean work area per policies and infection control standards.
• Operate mechanical machinery in central sterile.
• Follow policies to complete work assignments.
• De-lint towels and sheets.

EXPERIENCE:

• Previous sterile processing experience

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• 1. Retrieves contaminated instruments and delivers sterile instruments to where needed.
• 2. Removes debris by manually cleaning instrument.
• 3. Responsible for the operation and maintenance of decontamination equipment.
• 4. Inspects instruments and equipment to ensure the safety of our patients.
• 5. Tests and reports detected problems with all equipment.
• 6. Responsible for separating and keeping track of items that have been cleaned and sterilized.
• 7. Ensures to remove all waste matter from transfer carts.
• 8. Responsible for organizing, storing, and keeping records of sterile supplies.
• 9. Responsible for checking the expiration dates on supplies.
• 10. Maintains a clean work area following established departmental policies and procedures, and infection control standards.
• 11. Properly operates all mechanical machinery within central sterile.
• 12. Applies established policies and procedures in completing work assignments.
• 13. Properly de-lints towels and sheets.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• 1. Must meet Department of Labor’s MEDIUM duty standard (MEDIUM WORK- exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly).
• 2. Able to bend, stoop, reach and be capable of normal rotation, standing and walking for an 8-12 hour shift.
• 3. Must be capable of lifting up to 60 pounds and pushing loaded carts weighting in excess of 200 pounds.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

• 1. Physical working environment may include, but not limited to, any of the following hazards: high pressure steam, chemical, electrical, mechanical, bio-waste, stress, back strain, body fluids, etc
• 2. Environmental conditions may include, but not be limited to, variations in temperature, noise, odors, multi-stimuli, etc.
• 3. Will be working in PPE for extended period of time.

• 1. Must be able to work well in a fast paced, stressful environment as a team member.
• 2. Works with direction to effectively carry out the varied responsibilities of this position
• 3. Must be able to demonstrate flexibility in response to changes in work volume, staff and scheduling change
• 4. Must have an understanding of and adherence to Infection Control policies and procedures.
• 5. Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize one’s time to maximize personal efficiency and meet deadlines
• 6. Requires the ability to maintain confidentiality of all patient information.
