Job summary

The University of New Mexico in Gallup seeks a student-oriented tutor for the Adult Basic Education (ABE) Program, to work in-person in Gallup, NM. The tutor will provide academic tutoring, create tutorial plans, and support students with homework, problem solving, and test preparation across multiple subjects.

The position emphasizes tutoring students individually and in small groups, developing materials, and guiding learners with diverse needs.

Qualifications

• One year of full-time college; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
• Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
• Associate’s degree or higher preferred.
• Experience coordinating or providing tutoring services to at-risk student populations.
• Experience in higher education, preferably at a community college.
• Experience serving a culturally diverse student population, with a demonstrated ability to relate to and support underrepresented students.
• Experienced developing and facilitating presentations, workshops, and/or supplemental instruction sessions.

Responsibilities

• Tutors students individually or in scheduled group study sessions to review principles, solve problems, and review for tests.
• Administers testing instruments and writes individual tutoring plans.
• Facilitates reading and writing labs to develop writing, math, word processing, study, and other academic skills.
• Leads and trains entry level tutors in strategies to accommodate alternative learning styles and disabilities.
• Maintains and updates confidential files and records, ensuring that ethical and legal guidelines are maintained.
• Researches and selects learning materials, textbooks, software, and equipment to facilitate tutoring; may design specific handout, study, and related materials.
• Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act.
• Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

The University of New Mexico has established branch colleges to serve the citizens of New Mexico and to provide the highest quality of education for students pursuing post-secondary education at different locations throughout the state. Branch colleges respond specifically to the unique needs and multicultural backgrounds of their respective communities by offering community education programs, career education including certificate and associate degree programs, and transfer program that prepare students for upper division entry into colleges and universities. The UNM-Gallup Branch is currently seeking a highly motivated, student-oriented tutor to work in-person in the Adult Basic Education (ABE) Program. The tutor will provide academic tutoring services to a wide variety of individuals and groups. Creates and implements tutorial programs that guide and assist students with homework, problem solving, report writing, and test preparation. These selected candidate will:

• Tutors students individually or in scheduled group study sessions to review principles, solve problems, and review for tests.
• Administers testing instruments and writes individual tutoring plans upon review of textbooks; refers students to other agencies as appropriate.
• Facilitates reading and writing labs to develop writing, math, word processing, study, and other academic skills.
• Leads and trains entry level tutors in strategies to accommodate alternative learning styles and disabilities.
• Maintains and updates confidential files and records, ensuring that ethical and legal guidelines are maintained.
• Researches and selects learning materials, textbooks, software, and equipment to facilitate tutoring; may design specific handout, study, and related materials.
