Position Summary:

The Amada Turret Press Operator is responsible for safely setting up, operating, monitoring, and maintaining Amada turret punch press equipment to produce sheet-metal components that meet production schedules, engineering specifications, and quality requirements. This role involves in-process inspections, minor maintenance, and basic troubleshooting while maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work area.

This role requires a strong mechanical background, precision setup expertise, and the ability to independently troubleshoot quality and run ability issues. The operator must consistently maintain high-precision tolerances across varying materials and production volumes, including long, high-speed production runs and short custom orders.

This is not an entry-level press position. Candidates must be capable of full machine ownership on shift, including setup, adjustment, quality verification, and independent problem resolution.

Advanced Setup & Machine Operation

• Review work orders, job travelers, drawings, setup instructions, and material requirements before beginning each production run.
• Verify the correct sheet-metal material type, thickness, dimensions, quantity, and condition.
• Load the appropriate turret tooling, punches, dies, and forming tools according to the job requirements and approved setup documentation.
• Inspect tools for wear, damage, contamination, or incorrect installation before use.
• Install and align tooling accurately and confirm tool identification matches the program and setup requirements.
• Load or stage material safely using approved lifting and material-handling equipment.
• Load the correct CNC program and verify revision level, material settings, tool assignments, and production parameters.
• Perform a first-piece run and obtain required approval before beginning full production.
• Operate Amada turret press equipment in accordance with approved work instructions, machine operating procedures, and production schedules.
• Monitor machine operation for proper feeding, punching, forming, part separation, scrap removal, and tool performance.
• Ensure material is properly positioned and securely handled throughout the production process.
• Adjust approved operating parameters as needed to maintain part quality and production efficiency.
• Remove finished parts, skeletons, and scrap safely without damaging parts or creating safety hazards.
• Track production quantities, downtime, scrap, material usage, and job status accurately.
• Communicate production concerns, delays, tooling issues, or material shortages to the supervisor in a timely manner.
• Package, label, and stage completed parts according to work order and handling requirements.

Independent Troubleshooting & Process Control

• Independently diagnose and correct common operating issues, including:
  • Program issues and machine alarms
  • Material feed tracking problems and slug pulling
  • Burr formation
  • Tool wear or breakage
  • Material distortion and dimensional drift
• Stop the machine when necessary to prevent injury, equipment damage, or production of nonconforming parts.
• Troubleshoot issues using approved procedures, machine documentation, and operator training, verifying tooling condition, material orientation, program selection, setup accuracy, and machine status.
• Escalate issues beyond operator authority or training to the supervisor, maintenance department, programmer, or quality personnel.
• Document recurring machine, tooling, material, or quality problems to support corrective action and continuous improvement.
• Optimize stroke rates and feed settings to balance quality and throughput, minimizing downtime through proactive adjustments and mechanical awareness across both long, high-speed production runs and short-run custom orders.

Quality Assurance

• Read and interpret engineering drawings, tolerances, work instructions, and inspection requirements.
• Perform first-piece, in-process, and final inspections using appropriate measuring tools, such as digital calipers, micrometers, tape measures, gauges, templates, and go/no-go gauges, to ensure compliance with strict tolerances and Armstrong MetalWorks quality standards.
• Verify part dimensions, hole locations, forms, bends, burr condition, surface condition, and overall appearance, inspecting defects including incorrect hole size or location, tool marks, scratches, distortion, burrs, incomplete punches, and improper forming.
• Accurately record inspection results and production results as required by the quality system and production documentation.
• Segregate and clearly identify nonconforming material; notify the supervisor or quality representative when defects are identified, and implement approved corrective actions promptly, verifying results through additional inspection. Production metrics are tracked and reported daily. Operators are expected to meet established performance, scrap, and efficiency standards.

Tooling, Maintenance & Mechanical Knowledge

• Perform routine daily and shift-based machine care in accordance with the preventive-maintenance schedule, including cleaning, lubrication, and visual inspection of the turret press and associated equipment.
• Check fluid levels, lubrication points, air supply, filters, and other operator-accessible maintenance items as directed.
• Understand die-based tooling systems and punch/die relationships; monitor tooling condition and identify wear patterns.
• Clean, inspect, and properly store punches, dies, and forming tools; replace worn or damaged consumable items when authorized and trained to do so.
• Assist with installation and setup of newly purchased OEM pattern dies.
• Keep the turret press, tooling, work area, and material-handling areas clean and free of debris.
• Report unusual machine noise, vibration, leaks, alarms, tool wear, or other maintenance needs promptly, and assist maintenance personnel with service activities when requested and qualified.
• Perform minor troubleshooting of mechanical, electrical, and control issues within operator authority to minimize downtime; collaborate with maintenance technicians for complex repairs or upgrades.

Safety & Compliance

• Follow all company safety policies, work instructions, and applicable safety regulations.
• Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, gloves, arm guards, vest, and safety footwear as required.
• Inspect the work area and equipment before operation to identify unsafe conditions, damaged guards, or potential hazards.
• Verify that machine guards, interlocks, emergency stops, and safety devices are functional before operating the turret press.
• Use proper material-handling practices when moving sheet metal, tooling, pallets, and finished parts.
• Maintain an orderly work area free of scrap, sharp edges, oil, and other hazards.
• Immediately report injuries, near misses, damaged equipment, and unsafe conditions to the supervisor.
• Follow lockout/tagout procedures when required for maintenance, adjustments, or clearing hazards.

Education & Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Prior hands-on experience operating CNC turret presses, punch presses, or similar sheet-metal fabrication equipment required; experience with Amada turret press equipment strongly preferred.
• Ability to read work orders, shop drawings, and basic mechanical prints. Ability to use standard inspection and measuring tools accurately.
• Solid understanding of CNC machine operation, tooling, material properties, and sheet-metal fabrication practices.
• Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations involving fractions, decimals, measurements, and tolerances.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work independently within established procedures.
• Strong attention to detail, safety, quality, and production requirements.
