Job summary

University of Michigan is seeking a Turf Maintenance Specialist within the Grounds department to manage landscape maintenance duties in an assigned campus zone. You will lead a crew of three AFSCME Groundskeepers and up to six temporary or student staff, and work overtime in winter for snow removal.

You will report to the Grounds Supervisor and collaborate with other Grounds Specialists to ensure turf and hardscape upkeep, equipment operation, and seasonal maintenance are performed to high

Qualifications

• Associate's degree or equivalent combination of training/education and experience in a related field.
• Experience in a working lead landscape maintenance position directing the work of others.
• MDARD pesticide applicator license with categories 3a, 3b and 6, or ability to obtain within 90 days.
• Valid driver's license with less than six points.
• Ability to obtain DOT medical card upon employment.
• Ability to organize, motivate, and develop a cohesive and productive team.
• Experience with professional landscape maintenance and equipment.
• Experience with professional snow removal operations and equipment.
• Ability to work overtime, including holidays and weekends if needed.

Responsibilities

• Organize, coordinate, and carry out Work Plan activities for turf and hardscape maintenance.
• Organize, motivate, and develop a cohesive and productive team.
• Assist with recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of temporary staff and training.
• Coordinate and assist other specialty crews within the zone.
• Represent the department and consult with customers on landscape maintenance activities.
• Keep abreast of new landscape maintenance practices and equipment.
• Coordinate and perform maintenance, repairs, storage, and training for assigned equipment.
• Coordinate and perform snow removal as needed.
