Job summary

University of Michigan is seeking a Horticulture Specialist within the Grounds department. This field role leads a crew, coordinates landscape maintenance, and supports overtime work for winter snow removal.

The position collaborates with supervisors and other Grounds Specialists to maintain campus grounds. The role requires an associate degree or equivalent plus lead-crew experience, pesticide certification or ability to obtain it, and a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

• Associate's degree or equivalent combination of training/education and experience in a related field.
• Experience in a working lead landscape maintenance position directing the work of others.
• Michigan Dept of Agriculture Certified Pesticide Applicator License with categories 3b and 6 or ability to obtain within 90 days.
• Valid driver's license with less than six points.
• Ability to obtain DOT medical card and lead a cohesive team.
• Experience with professional landscape maintenance and equipment.
• Experience with professional snow removal operations and equipment.
• Ability to work overtime, including holidays and weekends if needed.

Responsibilities

• Organize, coordinate, and carry out landscape maintenance activities.
• Organize, motivate, and develop a productive team.
• Assist with recruitment, onboarding, and training of temporary staff.
• Coordinate snow removal as needed.
• Operate grounds equipment and tools.
• Communicate with customers on landscape maintenance matters.
