Job summary

Joby Aviation in Northern California seeks an experienced mechanical/aerospace engineer to join our Powertrain team. You will perform turbomachinery aerodynamic and mechanical analyses and design to develop turbocompressors supplying pressurized air to hydrogen fuel cell systems powering aircraft propulsion.

As part of a cross-functional team you will iterate through design/build/test cycles, use 1D/2D mean-line codes, CFD and FEA, and contribute to CAD models and prototype testing for

Qualifications

• BS in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering with 5+ years of experience, or advanced degree with 3+ years.
• Experience in aerodynamic and thermo-mechanical design and analysis of turbomachinery.
• Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
• Hands-on experience building and testing turbomachines.
• Experience across a full product and system development cycle.
• High proficiency with CAE tools (FEA, CFD, MATLAB/Simulink).
• Basic 3D CAD skills.

Responsibilities

• Perform aerodynamic and mechanical analyses for turbocompressors for hydrogen fuel cell systems.
• 1D/2D mean-line codes and hand-calcs, 3D CFD & FEA using CAE tools and custom tooling.
• Preliminary 3D CAD design to support analyses.
• Collaborate with teammates to optimize subsystems aerodynamically.
• Support prototype testing, fixtures, instrumentation, data acquisition and reporting.
• Assist testing of higher-level systems up to aircraft flight testing.
