Job summary

City of Pittsburgh Public Works seeks an experienced equipment operator to drive and maintain specialized vehicles (tractor-trailer, flusher, vactor, etc.), transport crews and materials, and ensure safe operations at job sites.

Requirements include two years of full-time truck driving, a high school diploma or GED, a Commercial Class A license with the L air-brake restriction lifted and N tank endorsement, and City residency. Background checks are conducted.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalency required.

Responsibilities

  • Drives and/or operates specialized vehicles and motorized equipment (e.g., tractor-trailer, flusher, vactor, jetter, winch, boom, aerial bucket truck, asphalt "tack" truck, crane truck, etc.).
  • Inspects mechanical condition of vehicle and reports malfunctions; performs preventive maintenance and makes repairs and adjustments.
  • Checks oil, water, gas, tires, etc.; may schedule periodic maintenance on vehicle; maintains written records relating to vehicle and equipment maintenance on vehicles.
  • Works as a member of the vehicle's crew as assigned or required.
  • Transports crews and/or materials and/or equipment.
  • Loads and unloads equipment and materials as requested or required.
  • Ensures that safety procedures are observed.
  • May be required to provide guidance and/or assistance to assigned work crew.
  • May be required to direct traffic at work site.
  • May tow or operate specialized equipment.
  • May work all shifts, weekends, and holidays.
  • Performs other related tasks and duties that are assigned or required.
