Job description

This is skilled and leader work in tree trimming, pruning, and removal.

An employee in this class leads and performs a wide variety of tasks in small crew tree trimming, pruning and removal including operation of light and heavy equipment requiring specialized skill in manipulating controls and attachments.

Daily crew assignments are checked while in progress or upon completion by a supervisor. Work involves responsibility for crew safety and efficiency and requires constant exposure to dangers of height, hazardous equipment, inclement weather, and tree pruning, trimming, and removal techniques.

Serves as leader and participates in tree trimming, pruning, and removal in normal and inclement weather. Participates in hazard trimming and tree removal during and after storms. Uses specialized tree equipment such as bucket trucks, chippers, stump grinders, and cranes and coordinates the preventive maintenance and proper care of equipment used by crew. Uses chain saws, hand and pole saws, pole pruners, gas powered pole saw, rope, climbing spurs, tree saddles, and a variety of other hand tools. Leads crew in tree and brush clearing in City parks. Operates heavy trucks with salt spreader and plow attachments for snow removal and ice control purposes. Performs related work as required.

A minimum of three years of paid experience in tree trimming, pruning and removal. Possession of a valid State of Ohio Class B commercial driver's license without air brake restriction.

Considerable knowledge of the methods, tools, and practices used in tree trimming, pruning and removal. Knowledge of distinguishing characteristics and growing habits of trees. Knowledge of preventive maintenance and care of forestry tools and equipment.

Ability to operate bucket trucks, cranes, chippers, stump grinders, and other standard tree equipment and tools. Ability to climb, maneuver, and work effectively in trees using rope and tree saddle. Ability to work at considerable heights under considerable restrictions or handicaps, such as utility wires, traffic congestion, and inclement weather. Ability to effectively lead the work activities of a small crew of workers. Ability to safely operate motor vehicles and construction equipment. This is a classified position.

The selection process will consist of a competitive examination, which may include a performance test, with credit for education and experience. A passing score must be obtained on the competitive examination in order to receive credit for education and experience. TEST WEIGHTS: Competitive Examination 70%, Education 20%, Experience 10%.

Candidates must meet the qualifications and requirements listed in the announcement at the time of examination and at the time of appointment.

NOTE: The competitive examination may be suspended if shown to be impractical because of an insufficient number of qualified candidates. The candidates will then be ranked in a standard manner based on 90% for qualifying and 10% for experience.

RESIDENCY: Candidates who have been resident citizens within the corporate limits of the City of Akron for at least one year immediately prior to the examination and who continue to reside within the corporate limits of the City of Akron throughout the remainder of the selection process will have 5 points added to their passing grades.

VETERANS: A veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States, honorably discharged from active duty, desiring a bonus of 5 points added to their passing grade, must submit proof of discharge in the form of a DD-214 with application.

Since this examination was posted on a combined basis, two separate eligibility lists will be generated with promotional candidates considered before open candidates.

DRIVER S LICENSE: An applicant having a valid driver's license from another state will be accepted conditionally provided that, if selected, an Ohio Driver's License must be obtained prior to appointment. Candidates having six or more points on their driving record at the time of appointment will be disqualified from further consideration.
