Job summary

Qualifications

Job description

** This position primarily operates Monday through Thursday, with Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays off, except when scheduled for on-call duty as part of the shift rotation. **

Under general supervision, performs a variety of tasks associated with the operation and maintenance of the City’s domestic production facilities, pumping and storage facilities, and potable water treatment facilities; performs such other duties as may be assigned.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is the entry level class for treatment in public works.Depending on assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Perform daily inspections of water system facilities including; wells, reservoirs, Arsenic
Removal, GAC and Ion Exchange plants, chlorination equipment and blending operations,
SCADA system; monitor and adjust flows and reservoir levels as directed.

2. Read and record meters, gauges and other instruments associated with treatment plants.

3. Make quality and quantity adjustments as needed.

4. Perform backwashing/forward flushing of treatment vessels as needed, inspect replace pre and
post treatment filter bags as necessary.

5. Perform repairs and maintenance to water system facilities.

6. Record daily and monthly production and treatment records; perform chlorination and blending
calculations.

7. Take water samples and chlorine residuals as needed.

8. Assists other production personnel in repairs and installation of system equipment.

9. Assists other Utility Divisions as required.

10. Performs mandatory shift work and on call duties.

11. Performs other duties as assigned.Education and/or Experience

Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and
abilities necessary for satisfactory job performance. Example combinations include possession of a
high school diploma or G.E.D. certificate supplemented by college level course work in Water
Supply Engineering and one year of experience in the operation of a water treatment plant and/or
distribution system

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Working knowledge of the uses and purposes of general tools and equipment used in construction,
maintenance or repair activity; safe work methods. Ability to perform a variety of semi-skilled and
unskilled work in the construction, maintenance, or repair of City sewer or water systems, and
related facilities; understand and follow verbal and written directions; work effectively in the
absence of supervision; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid T2 Water Treatment Operator Certificate and a valid Water Distribution
Operator Grade D1 Certificate issued by the State of California, Department of Health Services;
possession of or ability to obtain a Water Distribution Operator Grade D2 Certificate within one
year of employment.

Possession of an appropriate valid State of California driver’s license.

Must be able to respond within a forty-five (45) minute time period to the City while on standby
duty and must be able to communicate by telephone while on standby duty.

Incumbents must pass a medical examination at time of appointment.WORKING CONDITIONS

Work exposes incumbents to toxic or otherwise irritating substances and/or chemicals; incumbents work outdoors under varying weather conditions and must be able to perform heavy manual labor.
