Job summary

The City of Saginaw is seeking a cashier/payments clerk to collect and document receipts from the public, including water bills and taxes, using an in-house system. You will balance cash, prepare deposits, and print bills on demand.

Qualifications include a high school diploma or GED, at least 6 months of cash handling experience, strong communication skills, and proficiency with standard office equipment and Microsoft Office.

Responsibilities

  • Receives monies owed to the City by the general public, such as water bills, taxes and other payments.
  • Inputs revenue data into a computerized system by calling up the proper account and receipting payments.
  • Balances cash with receipts; prepares deposit slips and daily cash reports.
  • Instructs residents on the in-house touchscreen to print water bills, tax bills and special assessments as needed.
  • Processes applications for determining eligibility of senior citizens for tax deferment.
  • Assists with sorting, opening and organizing daily mail for processing.
  • Returns checks that are problematic or incorrect and advises customers on remedies.
  • Assists with closing and locking the safe and vault at day end.
  • Collects and applies drop box payments daily; this duty rotates weekly.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Position Purpose: Collects and documents receipt of monies owed to the City by the general public. Major Duties

  • Receives monies owed to the City by the general public, such as water bills, property taxes, and miscellaneous other payments.

  • Inputs revenue data into computerized system by calling up the proper account and receipting payments.

  • Balances cash with receipts, prepares deposit slips and daily cash report listing total amount of monies received.

  • Instructs residents on use of in-house touchscreen to print water bills, tax bills and special assessments as needed or requested

  • Processes applications for determining eligibility of senior citizens for tax deferment.

  • Assists with sorting, opening and organizing daily mail for processing.

  • Returns checks to customers that are problematic or incorrect; advises customer what is needed to remedy the situation and continue payment.

  • Assists with closing and locking of the safe and vault at close of day.

  • Collects and applies drop box payments daily. This duty is rotated weekly between incumbents.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements


  • High school graduate or GED equivalent; course work in math, bookkeeping and office procedures is desirable.

  • Minimum Six (6) months experience handling money and performing cash transactions.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with the public in person, by phone, and in writing.

  • Proficient in using standard office equipment, including calculators, telephones, fax machines, copiers, and cash counting machines.

  • Proficient in computer use with working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

  • Ability to maintain a professional attitude and appearance; maintain confidentiality in all transactions.


Working Conditions

This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force; work requires constant standing and occasional sitting; work requires seldom walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling, and reaching with hands and arms; work has standard vision and hearing requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; work seldom requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
