Job summary

TelCom Construction in Minnesota is seeking a GIS Technician – Underground Fiber to map, update, and maintain geospatial records of underground fiber infrastructure. This high-travel role supports telecom network planning, design, construction, and maintenance teams by ensuring fiber routes, ducts, handholes, and related assets are precisely documented in our GIS system.

Location: Minnesota-based, reporting base in Blooming Prairie/Rochester area; Travel: up to 100% across project corridors.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geomatics, Surveying, Civil Engineering, Telecommunications, or related field
  • 1–3 years of GIS experience (telecom or utilities preferred)
  • Proficiency in ArcGIS or QGIS
  • Experience working with fiber network data or utility mapping
  • Knowledge of underground infrastructure mapping standards
  • Ability to read fiber design drawings and as-built documentation
  • Understanding of coordinate systems and spatial data accuracy
  • Travel is required
  • Locating experience preferred
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to walk long distances and lift up to 50 pounds

Responsibilities

  • Data Collection & Entry: Digitize fiber routes, ducts, manholes, handholes, splice points, and cabinets into GIS databases.
  • Documentation & Media Handling: Interpret construction drawings and as-built plans, upload photos, and attach documents to GIS map locations.
  • Data Verification & Maintenance: Validate and reconcile field data against design documentation, coordinating with field engineers and construction teams.
  • Attribute Management: Maintain detailed asset attribute data, including fiber counts, cable sizes, splice details, and asset IDs.
  • Spatial Analysis & Reporting: Perform spatial analysis for route planning/expansion, and generate maps, reports, and KMZ files.
  • Quality & Compliance: Ensure all mapping adheres to telecom industry standards and data quality control guidelines.

What You’ll Do

What You’ll Need

Preferred Skills
  • Experience with fiber management systems and network inventory tools
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD for interpreting engineering drawings
  • Knowledge of spatial databases (e.g., PostgreSQL / PostGIS)
  • Basic scripting skills (Python) for GIS automation
  • Understanding of telecom standards and right-of-way mapping

The wage range for Traveling GIS Technician -Minnesota is $25.00 - $28.00.
