Job summary

TelCom Construction is seeking a Traveling GIS Technician in Minnesota to map, update, and maintain geospatial records for underground fiber infrastructure. You will support planning, design, construction, and maintenance with precise GIS data and field coordination.

You will digitize routes, verify field data, and generate maps and reports while traveling up to 100% of the time. Previous experience in telecom GIS and proficiency in ArcGIS/QGIS are required.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geomatics, Surveying, Civil Engineering, Telecommunications, or related field.
  • 1–3 years of GIS experience (telecom or utilities preferred).
  • Proficiency in ArcGIS or QGIS.
  • Experience working with fiber network data or utility mapping.
  • Knowledge of underground infrastructure mapping standards.
  • Ability to read fiber design drawings and as-built documentation.
  • Travel is required.
  • Valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

  • Digitize fiber routes, ducts, handholes, splice points, and cabinets into GIS databases.
  • Interpret construction drawings and as-built plans, take and upload required photos, and attach documents to map locations.

Are you a GIS Road Warrior with a spirit of adventure? At TelCom Construction, we are looking for a dedicated GIS Technician – Underground Fiber to join our team. In this high-travel role, you will be responsible for mapping, updating, and maintaining accurate geospatial records of our underground fiber optic infrastructure. You will serve as a key technical resource supporting telecom network planning, design, construction, and maintenance teams by ensuring fiber routes, ducts, handholes, and related assets are precisely documented in our GIS system.

Location: Must reside in Minnesota (reporting base out of Blooming Prairie/Rochester, MN area.)

Travel: Willingness and ability to travel up to 100% of the time along project corridors stretching from Minnesota through Iowa to Illinois.

What you’ll do

Key Duties:

Data Collection & Entry: Digitize fiber routes, ducts, manholes, handholes, splice points, and cabinets into GIS databases.

Documentation & Media Handling: Interpret construction drawings and as-built plans, take and upload required photos, and attach documents to specific GIS map locations.

Data Verification & Maintenance: Validate and reconcile field data against design documentation, coordinating with field engineers and construction teams.

Attribute Management: Maintain detailed asset attribute data, including fiber counts, cable sizes, splice details, and asset IDs.

Spatial Analysis & Reporting: Perform spatial analysis for route planning/expansion, and generate maps, reports, and KMZ files for planning and operations.

Quality & Compliance: Ensure all mapping adheres to telecom industry standards and data quality control guidelines.

What you’ll need
Required Qualifications
  • Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geomatics, Surveying, Civil Engineering, Telecommunications, or related field
  • 1–3 years of GIS experience (telecom or utilities preferred)
  • Proficiency in ArcGIS or QGIS
  • Experience working with fiber network data or utility mapping
  • Knowledge of underground infrastructure mapping standards
  • Ability to read fiber design drawings and as-built documentation
  • Understanding of coordinate systems and spatial data accuracy
  • Travel is required
  • Locating experence preferred
  • Valid drivers License
  • Ability to walk long distances
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds

Preferred Skills
  • Experience with fiber management systems and network inventory tools
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD for interpreting engineering drawings
  • Knowledge of spatial databases (e.g., PostgreSQL / PostGIS)
  • Basic scripting skills (Python) for GIS automation
  • Understanding of telecom standards and right-of-way mapping

The wage range for Traveling GIS Technician -Minnesota is$25.00 - $28.00.
