Job summary

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a PCU/Stepdown unit in California. License in hand (CA RN), current BLS/ACLS/NIHSS, and 2–3 years’ PCU/ICU stepdown experience are required. Candidates must be vaccinated against COVID and pass Relias Dysrhythmia and sterile technique tests on orientation day.

The unit features 12-hour day shifts, 1:3 nurse-to-patient ratios, and patients including ICU stepdowns, trauma, and sepsis cases. Cerner EMR is used for charting.

Qualifications

• Active CA RN license (Standard or Compact)
• Current certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS
• COVID vaccine required
• 2-3 years of experience in a PCU or ICU stepdown unit
• Experience with arterial and CVP pressure lines, titrating pressors, precedex, and trach/stable vented patients
• Must pass Relias Dysrhythmia exam
• Must pass sterile technique test for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes on first day of orientation
• Two professional references (one supervisor in last 12 months, one from last 3 years)
• Copy of driver’s license required

Responsibilities

• Critical care stepdown unit with 14 beds/7 rooms
• 1:3 nurse to patient ratio
• Patient population includes ICU stepdown patients, TBI/trauma patients, major surgery, CEA, and sepsis cases
• Uses Cerner EMR
• 12-hour day shifts beginning at 6:45am, 3 shifts per week
• Self-scheduling with 2–3 weeks’ notice
• Weekend requirement of 4 shifts in a 4-week schedule (Sat/Sun for days)
• First to float to Tele or MedSurg units
• No call or standby requirements
• One nursing aide typically covers all 14 beds
• RNs titrate drips including Precedex, dopamine, dobutamine, and levophed
• Close monitoring for stepdown patients transitioning from ICU
• Telemetry and high-risk medication training
• Navy blue scrub color required
• Unit-specific orientation provided
• Busy unit with frequent quick patient turnovers
• Focus on patient experience and core measures
• Holiday coverage as part of staff rotation

• Close-knit, team-oriented unit culture with effective teamwork
• Holiday coverage required as part of staff rotation, holiday RTO may be considered but not guaranteed

• Candidates may not have been directly employed by any CommonSpirit-affiliated facility (including CHI and/or Dignity) within the past year, though PRN employment through outside firms is acceptable
