Job summary

American Traveler is seeking an experienced PACU RN for a 13-week assignment at a Level I Trauma Center in Roanoke, VA. You will handle post-anesthesia recovery across diverse surgical cases with a 1:2 patient ratio, EPIC charting, and a 36-hour workweek over three 12-hour shifts.

Requirements include VA/Compact RN licensure, BLS/ACLS/PALS, and prior travel experience. On‑call, floating, and a holiday shift are part of the schedule.

Qualifications

  • Active Virginia State or Compact RN license required.
  • Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certification required; CCRN and NIHSS preferred.
  • Teaching hospital experience preferred; travel nursing experience required.
  • IV therapy including blood products, central/PICC line care, IV starts.
  • Ventilator management and airway management.
  • Neuro skills including stroke scale assessment; cardiac skills; post-anesthesia care responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver post-anesthesia recovery care across multiple surgical specialties in a Level I Trauma Center.
  • Manage 1:2 patient ratio in PACU; participate in on-call rotation and floating as needed.
  • Adhere to EPIC charting and maintain patient safety during perioperative phases.

  • Patient population includes adolescents, infants, adults, pediatrics, and geriatrics
  • Patient ratio of 1:2
  • Surgical specialties include ICU, trauma surgery, pediatrics, bariatric, breast, colorectal, dental, emergency general surgery, ENT, GI, gynecology, gyn-oncology, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, orthopedics, podiatry, pulmonology, and urology
  • Day shift schedule of 3x12s, either 8:00a-8:30p or 9:00a-9:30p
  • Weekend requirement of every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week block
  • On-call rotation required based on sign-up sheet
  • Floating required within skillset
  • EPIC charting experience required
Requirements
  • Active Virginia State or Compact RN license required (single-state license accepted only if from a non-compact state and pending)
  • Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certification required; CCRN and NIHSS preferred
  • Teaching hospital experience preferred
  • Previous charge experience preferred
  • Prior travel nursing experience required
  • Skilled in IV therapy including blood products, central/PICC line care, and IV starts
  • Respiratory care skills including ventilator management, chest tubes, airway management, tracheostomy, extubation, and End-Tidal CO2 monitoring
  • Neuro skills including craniotomy, EVD, spine surgery, and stroke scale assessment
  • Cardiac skills including antiarrhythmics, antihypertensives, vasopressors, opioids, reversal agents, arterial line management, and dysrhythmia management/CPR
  • Experience with surgical specialties including ENT, general, neuro, ortho, total joints, cholecystectomy, and spinal procedures
  • Monitoring and assessment skills including lab value interpretation, isolation precautions, malignant hyperthermia protocol, pain assessment, PCA pump management, and RASS
  • Pre/post-op skills including EKG, consent, cath/endoscopy/operative procedures, and straight catheterization
Additional Information
  • Deliver post-anesthesia recovery care across a wide range of surgical specialties in a Level I Trauma Center setting
  • Must work one holiday per 13-week contract
  • First-time travelers are not accepted for this role
  • Local candidates within 100 miles of the facility (based on driver's license address) are not accepted, with limited exceptions for inpatient RN roles at certain distances
  • Previous employees, whether per diem or permanent, must have a minimum one-year break before returning as a traveler
  • Travelers who have completed 365 days on assignment are not eligible to return, regardless of separation period, though case-by-case exceptions may be reviewed
  • All RTO requests must be submitted upfront prior to assignment start
