Description
American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a fast-paced Emergency Department position requiring ACLS, BLS, ENPC or PALS, and NIHSS certifications with a GA or compact license.
Details
- ER/ED unit within an acute care hospital that is a STEMI and Stroke receiving facility (no trauma designation)
- 24-bed unit including 4 behavioral health rooms and 2 critical care rooms
- 9-chair vertical flow fast track area and a separate triage area (travelers required to triage)
- 4 dedicated behavioral health safe rooms with in-house 24/7 security
- Treats approximately 70-80 patients per day with a 4:1 nurse-to-patient ratio
- Patient population spans ages 20-90 with common diagnoses including chest pain, abdominal pain, SOB, and uncontrolled diabetes
- Common drips include levophed, epinephrine, fentanyl, and propofol
- Staffed with 1 ED physician at all times plus 2-3 midlevels during peak hours
- 24/7 charge nurse coverage; charge nurse occasionally takes behavioral health assignments
- 1 PCT per shift supporting patient transport and phlebotomy
- RT present 24/7 performing ABGs, breathing treatments, and EKGs; RNs troubleshoot equipment only
- RNs read their own telemetry strips (GE monitors); no dedicated tele/monitor techs
- RNs perform their own lab draws
- 12-hour evening shifts, 10a-10p, with every other weekend
- Uses EPIC EMR
- Floating required between 3 Memorial campuses within 20-25 miles (compact license required)
- No call or standby requirements
Requirements
- Active GA or Compact RN license required, active at time of submission with no pending licenses accepted
- Minimum 2 years of ED experience required
- Required certifications: ACLS, BLS (AHA), ENPC or PALS, and NIHSS
- BSN not required
- Must be adept with EPIC charting system
- Experience in a fast-paced ED with limited resources required; smaller facility experience preferred
- Must be self-sufficient and comfortable managing high acuity patients without extensive support
- 2 professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, including employment dates and rehire eligibility
- Copy of driver's license required for consideration

- Care for a high-acuity ER patient population including cardiac, respiratory, and diabetic emergencies across all age groups
- Large level 1 trauma facility and children's hospital located 20 minutes away for transfers; no OB services onsite, so occasional precipitous deliveries occur
- Facility rarely boards patients but frequently transfers critical cases
- First week includes two 8-hour hospital orientation shifts at the main campus plus two 12-hour unit orientation shifts with a preceptor
- Holiday coverage expected unless otherwise negotiatedWeekend requirements are minimal due to strong weekend shift coverage
- Dress code is navy blue scrubs; plain or facility-branded sweatshirts allowed, no hoodies
- Not recommended for new ED nurses; ideal for experienced RNs comfortable in high-acuity, resource-limited settings
- Candidates may not have been directly employed by any CommonSpirit-affiliated facility within the past year
