The histology travel technician provides a variety of laboratory and histology procedures for the Anatomic Pathology Department. Successfully achieves and maintains competencies in all histology laboratory related skills.
Minimum of 2 years of experience required.
The intent of this job description is to provide a summary of the major duties and responsibilities of this position and shall not be considered as a detailed description of all the work requirements that may be inherent in the position.
Demonstrates compliance in laboratory safety policies, procedures, and standards. Maintains confidentiality of all materials handled. Demonstrates knowledge and operation of LIS software, computer programs and equipment. Performs routine preventative maintenance and troubleshoots malfunctions on equipment and instrumentation. Completes, records, and monitors quality control and quality assurance documentation. Reviews and understands standard operating procedures and completes continued education activities. Assists with inventory control. Demonstrates knowledge and proficiency in the following complex histology duties: tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, coverslipping, microscopy, tissue identification, solution preparation, automated & manual staining techniques when assigned, and general immunohistochemistry when assigned. Meets or exceeds departmental productivity standards in embedding and microtomy areas. Trains others to perform histology responsibilities when assigned.
Sitting up to 6 hours/day in 3-hour increments.
Standing up to 3 hours/day in 1-hour increments.
Walking up to 2 hours/day in 10-minute increments.
Rarely carries objects up to 25 pounds.
Hearing as it relates to normal conversation.
Seeing as it relates to general far/near/color and peripheral vision and depth perception.
Potential risk of biological, mechanical, and chemical hazards.
Gloves, protective face masks/shields, and lab coats.
Communicates with all levels of hospital personnel, clients, management, physicians, and outside vendors and visitors. Speaks, reads, and writes English.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent, ASCP certified or eligible, AS required.
Training and Experience: 2 years of previous experience in anatomic pathology or laboratory sciences.
