Archaeological Field Technician (Part-Time)

Position Summary: Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson (JMT) is seeking a part-time Archaeological Field Technician to assist with monitoring, Phase I, Phase II, and Phase III archaeological investigations as needed. A bachelor’s degree in anthropology or a related field and completion of a field school are required. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern United States. Candidates must be available for non-local travel. This position is not eligible for employer-based sponsorship, except for TN visa classification.

Pay range is $20 to $25 per hour, with overtime paid at time and a half.

This position is remote and involves 95% fieldwork.

Lodging (individual hotel room) and per diem will be provided or reimbursed. Mileage and drive time to and from project sites will also be compensated. Compensation rate will depend on experience, and weekly hours will vary based on project workload.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Assist Project and Senior Archaeologists during Phase I-II fieldwork across the South, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, and Northeast U.S.
  • Help identify pre-contact or historic artifacts encountered during shovel test pit (STP) or test unit (TU) excavations.
  • Be flexible with travel requirements.

Nonessential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills:

  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in challenging environmental conditions (e.g., rugged terrain, remote locations, extreme temperatures).
  • Flexibility with changing work schedules, good organizational and communication skills, strong work ethic, and willingness to learn and travel.
  • Must successfully complete and pass JMT's Motor Vehicle screening.
  • Valid Driver’s License required.

Required Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field, and completion of an accredited archaeological field school.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience with GPS/Trimble navigation and data collection.
  • Experience in CRM-based archaeological survey and/or excavation.
  • Knowledge of historic/prehistoric material culture and artifact processing.
  • Ability to navigate using compass and USGS topographic maps.

Working Conditions:

Work is primarily field-based (95%), requiring physical activity such as bending, kneeling, standing, shoveling, and lifting objects up to 50 lbs. Conditions may include outdoor environments with heat, cold, wet, or dry conditions. The remaining 5% of work is sedentary office work with standard lighting and temperature, and no hazardous conditions.
