Job Summary

The CT Technologist I performs procedures in accordance with departmental protocols and standards. Operates CT scanners and associated equipment with a high level of proficiency. This equipment includes scanner, post‑processing stations/programs, IV contrast injectors, O2 and suction equipment, patient transport and patient monitoring equipment.

Essential Functions

• Examines requests and verifies orders on each assigned patient. Refers and questions orders to the radiologist before performing exams. Contacts ordering provider when there are discrepancies.
• Properly identifies patients (using two patient identifiers) and assists patients while offering a brief explanation of procedures. Prepares patients for the procedure with a full explanation and documents on appropriate worksheets.
• Interviews patients for a complete medical history. Reviews in‑patients, ER and outpatients EMR's to obtain pertinent clinical history. Records medical history on requisitions. Correlates other test results and laboratory data with exam being performed.
• Assumes responsibility for the exam from beginning to completion of dictated results.
• Prepares and administers IV contrast according to departmental protocols. On request, records contrast type and amount.
• Evaluates technical quality of images and consults with a radiologist if needed. Recognizes abnormal anatomy and processes any additional, reconstructed images, and/or measurements as instructed.
• Performs basic patient care functions. Informs appropriate nursing personnel of any changes in the patient’s condition. Initiates life‑support measures when necessary. Assists in "code blue" procedures during medical emergencies.
• Performs CT scanning and assists radiologist/PA during invasive procedures. Practices proper sterile technique in the preparation of supplies. Performs all invasive procedures in accordance with bloodborne pathogens, isolation and infection control policies.
• Is authorized to obtain medication or contrast material as directed for administration by a licensed practitioner.
• Practices principles of radiation safety for self, employees, patients and family members. Follows appropriate radiation safety standards.
• Reports malfunctioning equipment to department director/manager/supervisor and clinical engineering/radiology engineer.
• Maintains knowledge and skills required to work safely in an environment that can create significant exposure to bloodborne pathogens and infectious disease.
• Adheres to hospital fire and safety procedures. Attends all in‑service classes and completes all required safety modules.
• Performs work accurately and timely in crisis situations where time is critical. Rotates shifts as required including call back, holidays and weekends. Adheres to attendance policy by being punctual.
• Operates radiology computer system to include entering orders and charging procedures/supplies. Documents contrast administration in the MAR.
• Maintains assigned work area neat, orderly and fully stocked. Cleans all work areas to promote cleanliness.
• Assists other medical personnel, such as anesthesia, when performing exams or services in conjunction with a CT scan.

Physical Requirements

Requires moderate to heavy physical effort in lifting and moving patients, equipment and supplies. May involve ordinary standing, walking and sitting. Frequently may need to stretch, bend, twist, squat or kneel. Exposure to various physical conditions such as walking on hard surfaces, climbing stairs, proximity to moving equipment. Requires use of radiation safety guidelines to prevent exposure to ionizing radiation.

CT/Rad Tech Dual Modality

• About Facility: Facility is a freestanding ED providing emergency care. AH Kannapolis – 2711 Lane St, Kannapolis, NC. 14 ED beds. Offers DX, CT and US imaging. Radius rule: Traveler’s permanent address must be 50 miles outside home unit.
• Department Information: Average scans per day: DX‑40, CT‑35, Ultrasound‑10. Minimum years of experience required: 1 year in specialty; highly prefer ED experience in a trauma facility. Will accept first‑time traveler depending on experience.
• Patient Types/Common Diagnoses: Emergency patients – MVC, shortness of breath, falls, injuries, DVTs.
• Required License, National Certification, Certs (BLS, ACLS, etc.): Rad Tech – BLS and ARRT(R). Dual Modality DX/CT Tech – BLS and ARRT (R)(CT).
• Skills required: Comfortability working independently is a MUST. Rad Tech: Xray tech to be independent in FSED. Dual Modality DX/CT Tech: Skilled in both DX and CT for dual technologist requests. Proficiency in scanning code strokes. Common scans discussed during interview. US Tech: Proficient with adult, pediatric, vascular, small parts and OB scans.
• Support within the Department: Supervisor – M‑F dayshift on site between Harrisburg and Kannapolis FSEDs. No radiologist on site – scans read remotely. 2‑3 technologists staff per shift.
• Technology/Equipment: EMR – EPIC. Phillips ISite/PACS. Tera Recon – 3D post processing. Client CT scanner – 16‑slice Optima 540. Siemens Acuson Sequoia US machine. Shimadzu XR portable and Philips XR room.
• Floating: DX/CT Tech must take 2 days a month of call (3) 12‑hr shifts for Harrisburg and Kannapolis FSEDs (20‑25 min apart). Details discussed during interview.
• Orientation (facility and unit): 3 days departmental.
• Scheduling: Weekend rotation: dependent on requisition. Call required: (3) 12‑hr shifts per month – specifics discussed during interview. Holiday expectations: Travelers will work holidays as scheduled. RTO: Manager approval. Shift times: Dependent on job requisition and discussed with manager.
