Job description

Academic Trauma Surgeon Opportunity

CAMC is actively seeking an Academic Trauma Surgeon that exhibits an aptitude, passion, and desire to educate residents and medical students with the willingness to participate in educational, clinical, research, and/or other scholarly activities. The surgeon will be joining a dynamic, goal-oriented team.

Located in the beautiful capital city of West Virginia, the Charleston Area Medical Center Institute for Academic Medicine is seeking a Trauma & Acute Care Surgeon for a full-time academic position in the Department of Surgery, Division of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care & Acute Care Surgery.

The successful candidate will provide Trauma Surgery, Elective General Surgery, Surgical Critical Care, and Acute Care Surgery services in both adult academic hospitals, one of which is an ACS-verified Level One Center with approximately 3,000 patients per year. The Acute Care Surgery service has more than 1,100 cases annually while the Division cares for approximately 1,100 patients per year in the Surgery-Trauma ICU.

In addition to supporting excellent educational opportunities for medical students and residents, the successful candidate will have the opportunity for scholarly activity supported by an internally funded, full-time research staff. Leadership opportunities are potentially available as the Division grows to include advanced training in Acute Care Surgery and Surgical Critical Care.

About

Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC) was established in 1972 and is a nonprofit, 1,138-bed regional tertiary referral center made up of seven hospitals: General Hospital, Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Memorial Hospital, Plateau Medical Center, Teays Valley Hospital, Women and Children’s Hospital, and Charleston Surgical Hospital. In addition to the hospitals, CAMC is comprised of the Institute for Academic Medicine and the CAMC Foundation. More than 1,500 providers are members of the medical staff of CAMC, which is also West Virginia's premiere medical teaching facility, hosting, on any given day, more than 1,000 students in programs leading to degrees or certifications in health professions.

CAMC also has a certified Comprehensive Stroke Center, PICU, the only Kidney Transplant Center in Southern WV, one of the highest volume heart programs in the US, and the largest Cancer Center in West Virginia accredited by QOPI and the Commission on Cancer.

CAMC has received many awards and accolades for its health care quality, including the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, Healthgrades Distinguished Hospital Award, Stroke Gold Plus and National Centers of Excellence recognition in minimally invasive surgery, robotic surgery, and urology and many more! In 2024, CAMC was recognized by Forbes Magazine as one of America’s Best-in-State Employers. For a complete list of awards visit: https://www.camc.org/about-camc/honors-and-accreditations

Location, location, location

CAMC is located within a natural playground of rolling, wooded hills containing the confluence of the Elk and Kanawha rivers. Charleston is the historic state capital and largest city in the state with a cost of living lower than the US national rate. We are centrally located to numerous major metropolitan areas in North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington, DC.

The area provides an easy getaway to outdoor activities like skiing, boating, and hiking, while the downtown area boasts a well-defined and growing business district with an eclectic brand of shopping, dining, breweries/distilleries, and entertainment. The city comes together for festivals and art-related events all year long – from summertime free concerts along the riverfront park and minor league professional baseball in the stadium to symphony, opera, ballet, or theater at the modern arts & sciences center. The downtown Capitol Market, located in the old train station, is a vibrant year-round indoor-outdoor experience offering seasonal produce, butcher shop, specialty foods, and exquisite wine shopping along with fine dining options.

We are proud of our diverse population and blue-ribbon schools in our area and across the state of WV. There are 6 schools within a 10-mile radius that offer advanced degree opportunities with tuition assistance available from CAMC.

Come see what our family-oriented community can offer you!
