Job summary

Alpharus Health is seeking a Substance Use Counselor for its Newberry site at the Newberry Correctional Facility. The role involves leading group-based, trauma-informed substance use treatment for incarcerated men and supporting recovery and reintegration.

The counselor will typically run 1–2 groups of 15 clients, document progress, and collaborate across Michigan facilities through a statewide network. A strong clinical skillset and MDOC alignment are essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree with minimum two years' experience or Master's degree with minimum one year of experience.
• Experience in substance use field with counseling, assessment, treatment planning and group therapy; working with offender population.
• Clinical licensure and/or Certification in Michigan or ability to obtain within designated timeframe.
• Ability to follow MDOC directives and work flexibel y to accommodate facility space and scheduling.

Responsibilities

• Provides group orientation, intake, comprehensive assessment, mid-program assessment and discharge planning including aftercare recommendations per MDOC contract.
• Documents treatment progress and discharge plans; maintains related records and charts.
• Provides evidence-based group therapy for up to 15 offenders per group per MDOC requirements.
• Performs individual segregation discharges as needed for offenders terminated from services, per MDOC and facility discretion.
• Completes reporting requirements and adheres to MDOC policies and procedures; maintains professional boundaries with offenders.
• Navigates between internal electronic health record and MDOC system for reporting.
