Northern Virginia Family Services (NVFS) is seeking Shelter Support Specialists for the SERVE Emergency Family Shelter in Manassas, VA. You will provide 24-hour awake coverage, ensure a safe, respectful environment, and support families toward housing stability.

The role emphasizes trauma-informed care, empathy, and collaboration with Housing Counselors. This on-site position offers set shifts and a comprehensive benefits package to employees.

Qualifications

• Experience in human services or related field is preferred.
• Experience with housing or homelessness services is advantageous.
• Fluency in English; bilingual skills are a plus.

Responsibilities

• Foster a safe, welcoming environment and respond to guest needs with empathy and professionalism.
• Conduct shelter orientations within 24 hours of arrival to explain policies and resources.
• Encourage participation in shelter programming and support housing stability goals.
• Model positive interactions and use de-escalation and trauma-informed practices.
• Ensure safety and security by monitoring the shelter and performing routine checks.
• Document incidents and assist with housing searches and service applications.
• Maintain confidential records and participate in team meetings and trainings.
• Collaborate with staff, volunteers, and contractors to deliver high-quality services.
