Job summary

Northern Virginia Family Services (NVFS) is seeking a Shelter Support Specialist to join the SERVE Emergency Family Shelter team in Manassas, VA. This role provides 24-hour awake coverage, fosters a safe, welcoming environment, and supports guests toward housing stability.

You will work with Housing Counselors, participate in team trainings, and maintain confidential guest records while upholding program standards and CACFP requirements.

Qualifications

• Experience in human services or related fields.
• Associate or bachelor’s degree in human services, social work, psychology, or related field preferred.
• Experience supporting individuals or families experiencing homelessness, crisis, trauma, or mental health challenges preferred.
• Ability to stay calm, exercise good judgment, and handle stressful situations.
• Strong interpersonal, communication and de-escalation skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Fluent in English; bilingual skills a plus.
• CPR/First Aid certification preferred or willingness to obtain.

Responsibilities

• Foster a safe, welcoming environment and build trust with shelter guests.
• Conduct orientations within 24 hours of arrival on rules and resources.
• Encourage participation in programs to promote housing stability.
• De-escalate conflicts using trauma-informed practices.
• Ensure safety by monitoring the shelter and conducting checks.
• Inspect rooms and personal property per shelter policies.
• Respond to emergencies following protocols and evacuations when needed.
• Document incidents accurately and confidentially.
• Assist with meal planning and CACFP compliance.
• Work with Housing Counselors on eligibility, intakes, and enrollment.
• Help guests with housing searches and documentation needs.
• Maintain guest records and participate in team meetings.
• Collaborate with staff, volunteers, and contractors to deliver services.
• Stay familiar with shelter systems and program software.
