Job summary

Northern Virginia Family Services (NVFS) is seeking Shelter Support Specialists for SERVE Shelter in Manassas, VA. The role provides 24-hour awake coverage to create a safe, trauma-informed environment and support families toward housing stability.

You will build relationships, conduct orientations within 24 hours of arrival, and work with Housing Counselors to help guests access housing, services, and documentation. This on-site role offers steady shifts and benefits.

Qualifications

• Experience in human services or related fields.
• Associate or bachelor’s degree preferred.
• Crisis, trauma-informed approach experience preferred.
• Fluency in English; bilingual skills are a plus.
• Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.

Responsibilities

• Foster a safe, respectful, and welcoming environment for shelter guests.
• Conduct shelter orientations within 24 hours of arrival.
• Encourage guest participation in shelter programming and skills development.
• Model positive interactions and use de-escalation and trauma-informed practices.
• Ensure safety and security and perform perimeter checks.
• Document incidents and maintain guest records per guidelines.
• Assist guests with housing searches and accessing services.
• Collaborate with Housing Counselors and program staff.
