Job summary

The Legal Aid Society seeks a Mitigation Specialist for the Exploitation Intervention Project (EIP) in New York, NY. You will provide client services to trafficking survivors and those affected by gender-based violence, supporting defense teams and post-conviction relief efforts.

Based in Manhattan with travel to all five boroughs, you will collaborate with attorneys, mitigation specialists, and community organizations to develop persuasive mitigation reports and coordinate services for clients

Qualifications

• MSW degree and NYS license in social work (LMSW or LCSW) preferred OR ability to obtain LMSW licensure within 6 months of hire
• Experience with sex workers, labor/sex trafficking survivors, or victims of gender-based violence, OR with justice-involved clients and/or trauma
• Excellent writing skills with emphasis on persuasive writing
• Strong track record of interdisciplinary collaboration
• Strong organizational and time-management skills
• Spanish or Mandarin language skills desirable but not required

Responsibilities

• Conduct biopsychosocial assessments and write persuasive mitigation reports
• Review and synthesize medical, educational, psychiatric, and employment records
• Attend court appearances and prepare clients for proffers and case conferences
• Assess client needs and refer to benefits, housing, counseling, and services
• Support immigration proceedings in collaboration with EIP’s immigration attorney
• Participate in post-conviction relief efforts and assist with motions
• Screen clients for trafficking criteria and statutory eligibility
• Represent EIP in anti-trafficking work and coalition-building
• Other duties as assigned
