Job summary

The West Virginia Department of Transportation seeks an Equipment Operator to work with a specialized crew across district projects. You will operate heavy machinery, assist in drilling operations, install piping and piling, and contribute to site maintenance and safety.

Four years of relevant heavy equipment experience and a valid CDL (Class A/B) are required. Expect irregular hours and possible overtime as part of state road maintenance duties.

Job description

**Disclaimer-this position will be considered classified-exempt and “at will.”**

This position will report to Dis-Force/Heavy Maintenance Headquarters in Ohio County. The Transportation Worker 3 Equipment Operator works with a specialized crew utilizing heavy motorized equipment to complete projects district wide. Will install large piping, piling beams, lagging on piling jobs, slip repair and maintenance. Knowledge of the procedures, techniques and equipment used in the area of assignment within heavy maintenance. Concrete fabrication and forming of structures and retaining walls. This work may involve operating machinery by hand that involves a great degree of strenuous activity. Operating heavy machinery in extreme conditions may be included in this level. Position could be required to lift up to 75 pounds or more. Performs other related duties as required.

  • The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression through the apprenticeship program is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as maintaining and/or obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • The WVDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and regulation of over 35,000 miles of state roads. This duty may necessitate employees working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, occasionally without prior notice.
  • In the area of assignment of Equipment Operator, a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License is required.
  • Tier 1 hourly rate: $23.5738
  • Not eligible for Tier 4.
  • Operates a hydraulic crane.
  • Utilizes heavy motorized equipment to excavate, backfill, grade, or level soil and aggregate.
  • Utilizes heavy motorized equipment to grade surfaces, roll or compact soil and aggregate.
  • Leads or trains lower-level equipment operators.
  • Assists the Core Driller in positioning the drilling rig.
  • Adds rods or augers to drill.
  • Removes core samples from the core barrel.
  • Assists in cleaning and maintenance of the drilling rig and related tools and equipment.
  • Installs steel piling in pre-drilled holes.
  • Cleans the drilling site of debris after drilling is completed.
  • Sets and detonates explosive charges for earth removal.
  • Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license is required.
  • In the area of assignment of Equipment Operator, a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver License(CDL) is required.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Knowledge of safety practices used in structural steel construction.
  • Knowledge of the procedures, techniques, and equipment used in the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety standards and procedures in the area ofassignment.
  • Knowledge of basic blueprint reading.
  • Knowledge of general construction and maintenance practices.
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul ofgasoline and diesel-powered engines and their components.
  • Knowledge of the operation of motor-driven equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repairs.
  • Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools.
  • Ability to read operation manuals, blueprints, and specifications in the area of assignment.
  • Ability to operate motorized equipment in the area of assignment.
  • Ability to perform skilled trades work in bridge construction and maintenance.
  • Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records of daily maintenance activities and of gauges and meters used in heating, ventilation, and cooling systems.
  • Ability to climb high steel structures.
  • Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi-skilled workers.
Preference may be given to Candidates with these qualifications

TRAINING/EDUCATION: No formal education required.

EXPERIENCE:
  • Valid Class A or B CDL and four (4) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience operating heavy equipment such as bulldozers, end loaders, dump trucks, drillers, etc.
  • Substitutions: Successful completion of an approved vocational school program may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience in the specified area of assignment.
