Job summary

State of West Virginia is seeking an entry-level Transportation Worker 1 Equipment Operator to assist in construction and maintenance of highways. You will drive light trucks, operate forklifts and various equipment, and support snow removal and ice control under supervision.

The role includes an apprenticeship program with a CDL requirement within six months, and potential advancement based on hours, training, and performance. Flexible statewide duties may require irregular hours and long weeks.

Job description

Nature of Work
  • Disclaimer-this position will be considered classified-exempt and “at will.” The Transportation Worker 1 Equipment Operator will report to the Summer County Headquarters. This position, under general supervision, will perform entry-level functions, working in the construction and maintenance of highways. Duties include: Driving a light truck or vehicle during regular operation as well as during snow removal and ice control (SRIC). Operating various equipment such as a fork truck, end loader, skid steer, rollers, utility tractor, brush chipper, as well as various hand tools. May fill in answering telephone and radio calls during SRIC. May be responsible for transporting materials or fuel to equipment. Provides traffic control by flagging on job sites. Selected applicants may be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. Performs related work duties as required.
  • The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. The selected applicant will be required, within 6 months of employment, to obtain a commercial driver's license (CDL). Progress through the apprenticeship program, as well as the opportunity for advancement to a higher classification, is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as obtaining and maintaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • The WVDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and regulation of over 35,000 miles of state roads. This duty may necessitate employees working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, occasionally without prior notice.
  • In the area of assignment of Equipment Operator, a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment.
  • Tier 1 hourly rate: $16.3538
Examples of Work
  • Operate a light truck or vehicle.
  • Operate a forklift truck to load and unload trucks.
  • May operate Endloader, Skid Steer, Rollers, Utility Tractor, and Brush Chipper.
  • Control brush and vegetation using hand tools and other equipment.
  • Plow snow using a light truck.
  • Perform minor maintenance on the fleet of equipment and vehicles.
  • Transport fuel to the equipment.
  • Answer telephone and radio calls during snow removal and ice control.
  • Flags traffic at construction sites.
  • Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license is required.
  • A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Knowledge of general safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and other motor-driven equipment.
  • Knowledge of the operation of motor-driven equipment.
  • Skill in the use of tools and equipment used in the repair of motor-driven equipment. Ability to diagnose minor mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repair.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to learn from example and work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, repair work orders).

  • This is the entry level classification in this series. No prior experience is required.

Annual Increment Pay

The annual increment is $60 for each full year of qualifying service, and is paid in July of each year. This is available to employees with 3 or more years of service.

Holidays

Twelve (12) paid holidays in each year.

Vacation

15 to 24 days per year depending on length of service.

Paid Sick Leave
