Position Summary

Pike County Transportation is seeking a dependable and detail‑oriented Transportation Scheduler & Dispatcher to coordinate and manage daily transportation operations. This position is responsible for scheduling and dispatching transportation services for county residents, including seniors, individuals with disabilities, and the general public. The successful candidate will be an effective communicator who can work in a fast‑paced environment while maintaining accuracy and professionalism.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Schedule and coordinate passenger trips using transportation scheduling software, ensuring efficient routing and vehicle utilization.
  • Dispatch drivers and vehicles in real time and monitor routes throughout each shift; adjust schedules as needed due to delays, cancellations, or emergencies.
  • Serve as the primary communication link between drivers, passengers, and supervisors during daily operations.
  • Receive and process trip requests via telephone, fax, or electronic systems in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Enter, update, and maintain accurate passenger trip and route data within the transportation management system.
  • Communicate with drivers via telephone, or digital messaging to relay assignments and resolve issues.
  • Coordinate with medical facilities, social service agencies, and other partner organizations regarding passenger transportation needs.
  • Respond to passenger inquiries and complaints in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly reports on trips completed, mileage, cancellations, no‑shows, and other operational metrics.
  • Maintain organized records in compliance with applicable county, state, and federal transportation regulations.
  • Assist with on‑call or after‑hours dispatch duties as required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Executive Director of Transportation and Human Services.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in transportation, scheduling, dispatching, logistics, or a related field preferred.
  • Basic computer skills required, including the ability to navigate scheduling software, databases, and standard office applications.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to remain calm, focused, and professional in a fast‑paced and sometimes stressful environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Dependable and punctual; ability to work flexible hours including early mornings, evenings, or weekends as needed.
  • Must pass a background check as required by Pike County Transportation policy.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Ecolane transportation scheduling and dispatch software is a plus.
  • Prior experience in paratransit or demand‑response transportation.
  • Knowledge of Pike County roadways and service area geography.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of dispatching procedures and transportation scheduling principles.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment including computers, multi‑line phone systems, and two‑way radios.
  • Accurate and efficient data entry skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to read maps and assist with route planning.
  • Professional and courteous demeanor when working with passengers, drivers, and partner agencies.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of passenger and operational information.
Physical Requirements
  • Primarily sedentary work performed in an office or dispatch center environment.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods while operating a computer and communications equipment.
  • Occasionally required to stand, walk, and perform light lifting (up to 20 lbs.).
  • Must be able to hear and communicate clearly by telephone and radio.
