The Transportation Supervisor oversees the day-to-day operational activity to meet Univar Solutions’ transportation customer service and financial targets effectively and efficiently. The role is to be the main site point of contact for Transportation execution and implementation of activities led by the District Transportation Manager (DTM) and other Transportation regional and department strategy initiatives.

The role will act as a key site liaison to assist in implementing improvement projects, handling tactical carrier performance issues, and, most importantly, being accountable for providing a safe and efficient work environment and transportation operations within the Branch.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:
Private Fleet Operations
  1. Direct manager supervising drivers and ensures drivers are dispatched and return safely.
  2. Manages labor hours and consumable supplies within the forecast budget.
  3. Prepares driver work schedules including extra workdays, overtime, and shift hours as needed.
  4. Monitors driver performance and ensures on-time service levels are met.
  5. Reviews delivery functions and productivity KPI reports to supervise and takes action on ways to improve dispatch routing or increase truck utilization.
  6. Ensures driver routes are optimized and driver workflow is efficient.
  7. Assist with the hiring process for new drivers.
  8. Ability to investigate and respond to customer complaints.
  9. May occasionally handle after-hour calls.
Environmental, Health, and Safety & Regulatory Compliance (DOT, Hour of Service, Training, Etc.)
  1. Interprets, trains, and consistently implements Company policies, protocols, and procedures including but not limited to food safety, DOT, EHS, internal audit, record keeping, etc.
  2. Ensures Driver compliance with local, state, and federal regulatory agencies (i.e., DOT, OSHA, etc.) and ensures that electronic logs are kept current and accurate.
  3. Coordinates efforts with the Safety department to aid in training, conducting associate observations, updating preferred work methods, conducting accident investigations to identify root cause, and routine safety inspections.
  4. Responsible for record keeping and driver credentials (HazMat, tanker endorsements, DOT physicals, Federal drug testing, etc.) are completed on time.
  5. Will work with DTM and other personnel if and when a safety spill or release has occurred at the customer site, enroute to delivery, or on-site.
Fleet Maintenance and Asset Management
  1. Organizes required repairs with proper departments as necessary.
  2. Responsible for licensing, registration, and preventative maintenance of the private fleet.
  3. Ensures equipment inspections are completed on time.
  4. Interacts with key maintenance vendors and Element to ensure quotes and work is completed effectively.
  5. Is responsible for the proper selection utilization of company assets in support of the Transportation department.
  6. Monitors maintenance and repair spending and communicates with DTM on areas of overspending or areas of improvement to keep cost spend within budget.
Carrier Performance and Route Guide Compliance
  1. Resolves tactical issues with carriers to ensure on-time pickup and will collaborate with the District Transportation Planner of carrier enroute or delivery delays.
  2. Provides feedback to the District Transportation Manager on carrier performance in preparation for QBRs.
  3. Makes recommendations for improvement, specifically in areas of efficiency, cost reduction, and assists with the implementation of effective service delivery changes.
  4. Visits customer locations and meets with customers to address issues and assess delivery difficulty as needed.
  5. Successfully engages and leads individual and team discussions and meetings.
  6. Applies all relevant policies in a consistent, timely, and objective manner.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
  1. High School Diploma/GED required.
  2. Bachelor’s degree preferred, not required.
  3. 3-5 years of supervisory leadership experience.
  4. Knowledgeable in DOT, FMCSA, and Hours of Service regulations.
  5. Experience managing and dispatching drivers.
  6. Organizational and time management skills.
  7. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  8. Basic understanding of Transportation Management software and SAP preferred.
  9. Solid understanding of Microsoft Office applications.
  10. Knowledge of chemical distribution facility operation preferred.
  11. Previous experience working in a unionized environment desired.
