Job Description - Transportation Specialist V: Traffic Signals (Austin District) (2501206)

Position Overview

TxDOT's Austin District is seeking a Transportation Specialist V to serve as a Co-Crew Chief for the Traffic Signal Crew at our Austin District Headquarters. This role involves planning, oversight, and providing high-level technical expertise for transportation projects, including design, construction, traffic operations, maintenance, and bridge inspection, in compliance with Department standards. The position requires developing and interpreting guidelines, regulations, laws, policies, and procedures, with interactions involving government officials, consultants, contractors, and private entities. Employees at this level are largely self-supervising and accountable for their work.

Recruitment Bonus & CDL Training

Eligible candidates may receive a one-time recruitment bonus up to $5,000 if holding a Class “A” CDL License (preferably with no transmission restrictions) at hire. Maintenance of employment and other conditions apply. We also offer company-sponsored CDL training, allowing you to earn full salary during training with lodging, transportation, and per diem provided if needed. Salary Range

Minimum: $65,104.00

Maximum: $106,634.00

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee project assignments, schedule, and work requirements.
  • Manage traffic management programs and electrical/electronic systems.
  • Coordinate with personnel, vendors, and manufacturers regarding equipment and repairs.
  • Ensure OSHA compliance and inspect ongoing projects for quality and safety.
  • Respond to public complaints related to traffic signals and signs.
  • Recommend replacements or modifications for traffic devices.
  • Serve as a lead worker and provide technical guidance in electrical/electronic systems troubleshooting and repair.
  • Address traffic signal timing issues, congestion, and develop long-term solutions.
  • Train staff on new operations and procedures.
  • This role involves driving a state vehicle.
Experience & Certifications
  • Minimum 5 years in transportation design, construction, traffic operations, maintenance, or bridge inspection.
  • Valid driver’s license and a Commercial Class
