Transportation Specialist V: Traffic Signals (Austin District)

This position involves planning, oversight, and technical expertise in transportation programs, including design, construction projects, traffic operations, highway maintenance, and bridge inspection. Responsibilities include developing guidelines, coordinating with officials, and ensuring compliance with standards. Employees are self-supervising and accountable for their work.

Essential Duties:
  1. Oversee project assignments, determine work requirements, and coordinate scheduling.
  2. Manage traffic management programs involving electrical/electronic devices.
  3. Prioritize and schedule projects.
  4. Consult with personnel, manufacturers, and vendors on equipment operation and repairs.
  5. Coordinate programs to improve efficiency.
  6. Ensure OSHA compliance.
  7. Inspect projects for proper use of resources and quality.
  8. Respond to public complaints regarding traffic systems.
  9. Recommend signs, signals, and illumination modifications.
  10. Serve as a lead worker if applicable.
  11. Provide technical support for installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of electronic systems.
  12. Address traffic signal timing and congestion issues, and develop solutions.
  13. Train staff on new operations.
  14. Perform additional duties as assigned; position requires driving a state vehicle.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field (experience may substitute for education).
  • 5 years of experience in transportation design, construction, traffic operations, maintenance, or bridge inspection.
  • Valid driver’s license; must have or obtain a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement within 1 year of hire.
Competencies include:
  • Traffic control device maintenance, inspection, electrical troubleshooting, safety standards, traffic management systems, electrical systems design, communication technology, data systems, preventive maintenance, work scheduling, teamwork, leadership, and decision-making.
Physical and Working Conditions:
  • Environmental exposure, physical demands, and safety gear requirements.
Conditions of Employment:
  • Pre-employment physical and drug testing.
  • For bridge inspection, certification or training within 1 year of hire.
Position Details:

Based at Austin District Headquarters, serving as a Co-Crew Chief for Traffic Signal Crew. May qualify for a recruitment bonus of up to $5,000 with a Class “A” CDL. CDL training is available. Offers comprehensive benefits, work-life balance, and recognition programs.
