Job Description

Position Title: Transportation Specialist
Department: Operations
Division: 7
Report to: Resident Engineer or Resident Manager
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Location: Multiple Locations

Note: Candidates may need to pass background checks, drug screenings, Physical Abilities Demonstrations, and hold relevant registrations or certifications.

Basic Purpose

Plan, supervise, and perform technical and professional transportation work, including research, planning, design, survey, environmental studies, bid lettings, construction, maintenance, or project management.

Typical Functions

  • Sampling and testing materials for highway construction and maintenance.
  • Surveying highway grades and alignments.
  • Collecting statistics on the highway system.
  • Conducting traffic studies.
  • Managing bid processes for construction projects.
  • Inspecting and overseeing contractors and utility work.
  • Planning and reviewing transportation systems and projects.
  • Real estate duties including appraisal, acquisition, and relocation assistance.
  • Supervising transportation employees.

Level Descriptor

Level I: Entry-level technical work, training status, supervised tasks.
Level II: Full performance technical tasks, independent responsibilities.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Level I: Basic geometry, algebra, lab equipment, construction materials, following instructions, measuring, data collection, operating equipment.
Level II: Knowledge of survey procedures, plans, transportation planning; skills in measurement, data, equipment, reading plans, testing materials.

Education and Experience

Level I: None required.
Level II: One year transportation-related experience or equivalent education (e.g., two college courses in relevant fields).

Special Requirements

  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel.
    Some positions may require physical demonstrations and certifications.
