  • Conduct regular ride-alongs and annual performance reviews.
  • Fill midday routes and handle parent/district concerns.
  • Ensure compliance with transportation regulations and attends case conferences.
  • Organize in-service training for drivers and monitors.

Job description

Position Purpose

The purpose of this position is to meet the daily needs of our special needs students and staff; meeting the demands of special needs while working inside the resources of Transportation.

Essential Job Functions
  • Act as first point of Special Needs Transportation contact for township administration, special needs parents/guardians, and special needs staff to include daily radio dispatch.
  • Overseeing all specialized routing and assist in special needs routing as required.
  • Continually maintain special needs student data and communicate pertinent information to drivers.
  • Maintain communication with drivers and monitors to ensure routes are being run safely, correctly, timely and efficiently.
  • Review and optimize routes regularly; change routes and/or route assignments accordingly.
  • Assign drivers and monitors to special needs routes and all mid-days.
  • Interview and recommend for hire, potential special needs drivers in cooperation with hiring panel.
  • Oversee discipline for all special needs drivers and monitors as it pertains to student management and monitor/driver teams.
  • Complete regular "ride alongs" with drivers to ensure all aspects of student management are adhered to.
  • Substitute on routes as driver or monitor as needed.
  • Conduct yearly reviews for all special needs drivers and monitors.
  • Work closely with building and district administration to ensure transportation is compliant and assist in scheduling special programs to ensure available transportation.
  • Attend case conferences where student concerns/needs may affect transportation.
  • Fill all mid-day requests including routes where drivers have called off in coordination with dispatch.
  • Handle all parent and district concerns regarding special needs transportation.
  • Work in coordination with dispatch, training supervisor, office manager (payroll), and fleet supervisor to ensure all aspects of special needs is conveyed as it relates to their duties while maintaining a "team" mentality.
  • Hold periodic meetings with Administration and staff to remain abreast of transportation issues and strive for staff relations improvement.
  • Organize and participate in continued education and "In-service" training for special needs drivers and monitors,
  • Attend departmental and district special events.
  • Maintain high level of positive driver/monitor support and communication.
  • All other duties as assigned by the Transportation Director or designee.
Equipment

Use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copier and fax machines, calculator, and telephone. Operate school buses and other district vehicles.

Travel Requirements

Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Pay Rate

$65,501.05 Annually

Work Schedule

8 hours per day. 260 days per year. Hours will vary to meet the needs of the department.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Working knowledge of Versatrans and Onscreen.
  • Organized, able to multi-task, high level of written skills, verbal skills, strong leadership skills, work ethic and communication with all stakeholders while maintaining confidentiality at all times.
  • Ability to maintain work schedule and high level of attendance.
  • Previous Transportation and/or Management experience.
  • Knowledge of Special Needs laws and regulations.
  • Comprehensive understanding of logistics.
  • Ability to change shifts per demands of transportation department.
  • Hold a valid class B CDL with P and S endorsements preferred.
  • IDOE Annual Safety Meeting Certification (Yellow Card) required (training provided).
  • Hold a Bachelor's Degree in related field preferred or comparable experience.
