The Manager of Transportation will foster a culture focused on safety, service, and cost-efficiency through meaningful engagement with drivers, delivering best-in-class service to customers, and ensuring safe and profitable operations. They will leverage their transportation operations experience to manage personnel and drive efficient outbound shipments to customers and distribution centers, ensuring safety, accuracy, and timeliness.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Safety Leadership: Promote a safety-first culture, ensuring injury-free interactions among associates, customers, and the public. Champion safety procedures, processes, and training.
- Team Development: Coach and develop drivers and transportation associates, conduct performance discussions, and create development plans.
- Communication & Motivation: Encourage upward communication and motivate team members to meet department goals.
- Supervision & Engagement: Oversee work and productivity, foster engagement, and uphold US Foods values.
- Team Building: Participate in hiring, review performance, coach, and address disciplinary issues.
- Operational Oversight: Monitor production goals, ensure accuracy, troubleshoot delivery issues, and ensure compliance with DOT regulations.
- Process Improvement: Identify waste, improve safety and efficiency processes.
- Safety Meetings & Maintenance: Conduct safety and driver meetings, oversee driver qualification files, and investigate accidents.
- Scheduling & Miscellaneous: Plan shifts using planning tools, and perform other duties as assigned.
Supervision
- Direct supervision of union and/or non-union drivers.
Relationships
- Internal: Transportation leaders, drivers, warehouse leaders, other departments.
- External: Customers.
Work Environment
- Primarily on the road and in trucks, with time in an office environment.
Minimum Qualifications
- At least 3 years of transportation/delivery or warehouse distribution experience.
- At least 1 year of supervisory experience.
- Driving experience is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of transportation operations and safety regulations.
- Leadership, communication, and development skills.
- Ability to interpret operational data and basic computer skills.
Travel
Approximately 10%, mainly for meetings and training.
Education & Training
- High school diploma or GED required; college degree preferred.
Physical Qualifications
Must perform physical activities as specified, including occasional lifting, standing, walking, and frequent driving and sitting.
Compensation
Expected range: $55,000 - $90,000, based on experience and location.
