Overview:
The Transportation Manager oversees the daily transportation operation, including dispatch, driver check-in/check-out, and route coverage. This role is responsible for supporting day-to-day operations, staffing, service levels, and communication between drivers, dispatch, and management teams to help ensure deliveries are completed safely and efficiently.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee the day-to-day transportation operation, including dispatch, driver check-in/check-out, and route coverage.
- Make sure deliveries are completed safely, on time, and according to company standards.
- Monitor staffing, schedules, labor hours, and overtime to support daily operational needs.
- Work with routing, warehouse, and dispatch teams to resolve operational and service issues.
- Handle driver concerns, delivery delays, customer issues, and other situations that come up during the shift.
- Follow up on service failures, delivery mistakes, customer complaints, credits, and returns.
- Provide support, direction, and coaching to drivers and transportation employees as needed.
- Assist with accident reviews, investigations, and documentation related to operational incidents.
- Ensure employees follow company policies, safety procedures, and DOT regulations.
- Maintain communication with drivers, dispatch, supervisors, and management throughout the day.
- Help ensure the operation is properly staffed and supported based on business needs.
- Support a positive and professional work environment within the department.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- Strong understanding of transportation operations, dispatch, and DOT regulations.
- Strong prioritization and problem-solving skills in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to make independent decisions in line with company policies and procedures, ensuring timely and consistent application.
- Ability to multitask and work independently in a fast-paced environment.
- Valid driver's license.
- Proficiency in English is required; Spanish is a plus
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field is preferred, or equivalent experience in a managerial role (minimum 3 years).
- At least 2–3 years of direct leadership experience overseeing transportation operations.
- Prior experience managing dispatch, routing, or delivery operations in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience working in food distribution, warehouse, or cold chain operations is a plus.
- Prior experience in a transportation environment.
- Proficiency in using TMS software to optimize routing, scheduling, and overall transportation logistics.
- Familiarity with dispatch operations software for tracking shipments, and monitoring vehicle status.
- Ability to use data analysis tools (e.g., Excel, Power BI software) to analyze performance metrics and drive decision-making.
- Experience using GPS and routing tools.
- Experience with fleet management systems to monitor vehicle maintenance, and driver performance.
- Familiarity with mobile applications used for tracking shipments and communication with drivers.
- Knowledge of software tools for monitoring compliance with safety regulations and DOT requirements.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications Word, Teams, Excel, and PowerPoint, for reporting and presentations.
- Experience with Kronos UKG, SMG, Ortec, Samsara and Intellishift is a plus.
- Ability to walk and stand for long periods.
- Must be able to bend, lift, twist, climb, and navigate stairs.
- Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs.
- Ability to work in a cold environment.
- Operate company vehicles to monitor and assess operations.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
- Must be well-organized and able to manage tasks efficiently.
- Willingness to work extended hours, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- May occasionally need to travel to other operating companies or the corporate office for training or business purposes.
- Regularly required to talk and listen as part of daily tasks.
