The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) is seeking a Transportation Generalist for Fairmont to support winter maintenance operations. The role involves snow and ice control, equipment inspection, and post-storm cleanup across roadways and bridges.

Position is temporary with an anticipated end date of April 2027. Successful candidates will hold a valid CDL with tanker endorsement and be able to perform strenuous manual labor in varying weather conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain roadways for snow and ice control during shifts.
  • Inspect and prepare winter equipment and snowplows.
  • Perform snow-route inspections and post-storm cleanup of bridges, guardrails, and roadways.
  • Handle stockpile setup and transfer of de-icing chemicals; measure and report.
  • Install, repair, maintain, and remove snow fences and replace mailboxes.
  • Maintain snow and ice data documentation for inventory and resources.
  • Set up traffic control and notify dispatch of disabled vehicles.

Job Summary

*Please note: These are temporary positions with an anticipated end date of April 2027. This will be used to fill three (3) vacancies.

  • Maintains roadways for snow and ice control: removes snow from roadways and shoulders; opens and widens roadways of large accumulations of snow; removes snow from rights of way or yards; applies anti-icing and de-icing chemicals on stretches of highway under slippery conditions; removes frozen ice and material from culverts; and performs night or dawn patrols.
  • Prepares and inspects winter equipment – maintains snowplow equipment, cutting edges and sanders; and cleans equipment post storm.
  • Performs preseason snow route inspection and performs post storm cleanup including machine or hand sweeping of bridges, guardrails, sidewalks, crossovers, medians, ramps, and roadways.
  • Performs winter stockpile setup and transfer of anti-icing and de-icing chemicals. Includes all setup work associated with liquid anti-icing and de-icing chemicals, hauling, mixing, measuring, and reporting.
  • Performs all work related to installing, repairing, maintaining, and removing snow fences; replacing mailboxes.
  • Maintains documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management.
  • Performs traffic control set-ups and/or provides notification to dispatch of disabled vehicles.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • A Valid Commercial Driver’s License (Class A or Class B) with tanker endorsement and no air brake restriction.

The experience needed to perform this job at the TG level can be achieved with:

  • One (1) year of experience performing activities in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities (roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, commercial landscaping, operating heavy equipment, or farm experience).
  • OR

Successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (of at least 60 semester credits; or 90 quarter credits) will substitute for one year of experience. (In order for education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience you must submit a copy of your transcripts).

  • Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak, and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.
Physical Requirements
  • The physical demands of this job will vary, but typically requires lifting 100 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects such as 50-pound bags.This job also may require walking or standing to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting most of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls.This job will require strenuous manual labor including but not limited to digging, shoveling, hauling, crawling, bending, pushing, pulling and climbing.
  • Weather elements:May require frequent exposure to weather elements (cold and hot) on a daily basis.
