Job summary

A. Morton Thomas and Associates, Inc. (AMT) is offering a paid Transportation Engineer Intern summer internship in our Richmond, Virginia office.

The internship runs mid-June to mid-August 2027 and could lead to a full-time position upon graduation. The role emphasizes roadway, traffic, and hydraulic design with hands-on tasks under project managers. Responsibilities include preparing design plans, exhibits, cost estimates, and reports, plus site visits and coordination with the design team.

Qualifications

• Rising 3rd or 4th year BSCE student.
• Interest in roadway design, traffic engineering or hydraulic design.
• Must be at least 18 years old; GPA 3.0 or higher.
• Strong verbal and written communication.

Responsibilities

• Prepare roadway, trail and sidewalk design plans using OpenRoads Designer and MicroStation.
• Prepare meeting exhibits and construction plans.
• Prepare Basis of Design reports and specifications.
• Identify potential utility conflicts and avoidance measures.
• Calculate quantities and prepare cost estimates.
• Conduct site visits and field inspections.
• Perform other design and related tasks as directed.
