Transportation Engineer I: Performs transportation engineering work in areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations, and maintenance. Ensures compliance with federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines. Requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices with minimal supervision.

Transportation Engineer II: Performs complex transportation engineering work in areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations, and maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable laws and standards. Works independently on assignments; unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Transportation Engineer III: Performs advanced and complex transportation engineering work across various functional areas. Establishes work plans and priorities to meet objectives. Handles issues independently, rarely referring to supervisors.

Transportation Engineer IV: Performs highly advanced and complex transportation engineering tasks. Acts as a project manager, overseeing consultants and utilizing project management principles. Responsible for initiating, planning, executing, monitoring, controlling, and closing complex projects.

Transportation Engineer V: Performs highly advanced and complex engineering work, including analysis and reporting on program funding, establishing project schedules, and overseeing resource planning. Maintains accountability for project outcomes.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science accepted by TX PELS.
• Experience: Varies by level, from 4 to 8 years in engineering or related fields, with substitutions possible for graduate education.

Licenses and Certifications:

• Valid driver’s license; ability to operate a state vehicle.
• Licensed Professional Engineer; out-of-state licenses must meet Texas requirements within six months of hire.

Competencies:

• Knowledge of industry guidelines, highway design, project planning, contract oversight, computer applications, safety, and decision-making processes.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

• Subject to environmental conditions, noise, vibration, and requiring protective gear.
• Light physical activity, including lifting, climbing, balancing, walking, fingering, talking, and visual tasks.
