Job summary

North American Transportation Management Institute in Kentucky is seeking an exempt, 12‑month transportation supervisor to plan, schedule, and supervise school bus operations, fleet maintenance, and budgeting duties. Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.

  • Knowledge of Federal and State laws pertaining to student transportation.
  • Must obtain First Aid/CPR certification within one year of hire.
  • Must pass criminal background check and drug screening.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, schedules, assigns and supervises drivers and vehicles for regular routes and field trips. Recruits substitutes as needed.
  • Supervises mechanics engaged in overhaul and repair of school buses; inspects work.
  • Provides information to the public on transportation schedules, policies and procedures.
  • Advises employees, citizens and school personnel regarding transportation schedules and programs.
  • Oversee direct repair of all district-owned vehicles and plans for preventive maintenance.
  • Process vehicle repair requests and prioritize work orders; contract for services when needed.
  • Monitor fuel deliveries and distribution.
  • Compile budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs.
  • Administer transportation budget and ensure programs are cost-effective and funds are managed wisely.
  • Initiate purchases and bids within budgetary limitations and district policies.
  • Maintain current inventory of supplies and parts to avoid ordering delays.
  • Approve and forward invoices for transportation to accounting.
  • Recommend disposal or purchase of vehicles and equipment.
  • Receives and resolves transportation issues; ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Prepare reports on accidents, driver training and payroll related issues.
  • Conduct monthly safety meetings and maintain driver handbook with updated policy information.
  • Make recommendations during inclement weather and school closings.
  • Perform duties of Bus Driver, Routing Coordinator or Safety Trainer when necessary.
  • Assist with teaching safety classes and administration of drug testing.

JOB SUMMARY

Performs administrative and skilled trades work planning, scheduling, assigning school transportation services, preparing and maintaining transportation records and files, preparing reports, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Superintendent of Schools. Department supervision is exercised over all personnel within the department. Has the ability to oversee fleet vehicle records and personnel records.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Plans, schedules, assigns and supervises drivers and vehicles for regular routes and field trips. And recruit substitutes as needed.
  • Schedules, prioritizes, supervises, inspects and participates in the work of mechanics engaged in the overhaul and repair of school buses.
  • Provides information to the public on transportation schedules, policies and procedures.
  • Advises employees, citizens and school personnel regarding transportation schedules and programs.
  • Oversee the direct repair of all district-owned vehicles and oversee plans for preventive maintenance.
  • Process vehicle repair requests and prioritize work orders. Contract for services that cannot be performed in shop.
  • Monitor fuel deliveries and distribution.

  • Administer transportation budget and ensure that programs are cost-effective and that funds are managed wisely.
  • Initiate purchases and bids in accordance with budgetary limitations and district policies.

  • Recommend disposal of obsolete or worn out vehicles and equipment. Recommend purchase of vehicles as necessary.
  • Receives and resolves transportation issues.
  • Ensures compliance with state department regulations.
  • Prepares reports and written documentation of events involving accidents; prepares reports on driver training and payroll related issues.
  • Conduct monthly safety meetings.
  • Maintains driver handbook; ensure policy information is updated and in compliance with rules and regulations.
  • Makes recommendations concerning early release during inclement weather and school closings.
  • Performs duties of a Bus Driver, Routing Coordinator or Safety Trainer when necessary.
  • Assists with teaching safety classes; assists with administration of regular and random drug testing.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is continuously required to sit and occasionally required to walk or stand. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk while performing the duties of this job. The employee frequently repeats the same hand, arm or finger motion many times. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds such as a student. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception and peripheral vision.
SUPERVISION OF OTHER EMPLOYEES
  • This position supervises bus drivers and mechanics.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Bachelor's degree in transportation, management, business or related field preferred. Three years supervisory experience in transportation operations, preferably with public school districts or a combination of seven (7) years of education and/or experience.
  • Knowledge of Federal and State laws pertaining to student transportation, including vehicle specifications.
  • Must be able to obtain First Aid/CPR certification within one year of hire.
  • Previous bus driving preferred. Defensive driving course and working knowledge of bus operations preferred.
  • Ability to work with children.
  • Certification/Licensure required. Must be able to obtain a valid MN CDL with air brake endorsement, passenger endorsement and school bus endorsement, licensed D.O.T. evaluator, and have less than three moving violations in the past five years.
  • Must complete the necessary application process and pass a criminal background check and drug screening test.
  • Basic computer skills.
