General Definition of Work

Performs intermediate semi-skilled and manual work driving a school bus or van, picking up and delivering students to/from school, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Transportation Assistant.

Essential Functions
  • Performs school bus pre- and post-trip inspections; reports operating and equipment deficiencies.
  • Washes vehicle; cleans vehicle inside and out; checks fluid levels; fuels bus as required.
  • Obeys traffic laws and observes mandatory safety regulations for school bus operations.
  • Transports only authorized individuals.
  • Reports accidents and completes required reports.
  • Conducts periodic emergency bus evacuation drills.
  • Records mileage; maintains various records and prepares reports on activities.
  • Ensures passenger safety; maintains discipline on bus; completes disciplinary forms as needed.
  • Makes vehicles available for periodic maintenance and reports unscheduled maintenance needs.
  • Transports students to special events and field trips.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of the operation of a school bus or van; general knowledge of the geography of the City/County and the location of streets; skill in the safe operation of a school bus or van; ability to detect malfunctioning equipment; ability to assist children using patience and understanding; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, associates, students and the general public.

Education and Experience

A high school diploma or GED, a valid Minnesota Driver’s License, an insurable driving record, experience operating automotive equipment, and health certification is required. The ability to pass a Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Background Check is required.

A commercial driver’s license with school bus endorsement is preferred and may be required for some driving positions.

Physical Requirements

This physical requirements include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force;
  • work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions, frequently requires reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires walking and lifting;
  • work requires distance vision, depth perception, night vision and peripheral vision;
  • vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly;
  • hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound;
  • work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities;
  • work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and exposure to bodily fluids;
  • work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
