Job description

Accelerate your career at RXO
RXO is a leading provider of transportation solutions. With cutting-edge technology at the center, we're revolutionizing the industry with our massive network and commitment to finding solutions for every challenge. We create more efficient ways for shippers and carriers to transport goods across North America.

The Director of Transportation Operations is responsible for leading, strategic planning, and optimizing the company's end-to-end transportation network, fleet management, and logistics partnerships. This role oversees carrier management, routing efficiency, regulatory compliance, transportation technology (TMS), and operational cost controls. The ideal candidate will drive continuous improvement, enhance service delivery, and align transportation strategies with broader organizational growth and P&L goals.

What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Define and execute the overarching transportation strategy across inbound, outbound, and multi-modal network logistics.

  • Continuously evaluate transportation routes, carrier networks, and distribution hubs to minimize lead times and reduce operational costs.

  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives (Lean, Six Sigma) to eliminate inefficiencies and improve service reliability.

  • Oversee carrier selection, contract negotiations, rate structures, and service level agreements (SLAs) across truckload (TL), less-than-truckload (LTL), parcel, intermodal, and dedicated fleets.

  • Establish and monitor Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for carrier performance, including On-Time In-Full (OTIF) delivery, damage rates, and billing accuracy.

  • Maintain strong strategic relationships with key transportation providers and 3PL partners.

  • Manage the annual transportation budget and P&L performance, analyzing variances and implementing cost-saving measures.

  • Oversee daily dispatch, freight scheduling, load planning, and routing operations across all sites.

  • Partner with warehouse operations, customer service, and procurement teams to align supply chain demand with transportation capacity.

  • Ensure full compliance with federal, state, and international transportation laws and regulations (e.g., DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, EPA, and Hazmat guidelines).

  • Enforce strict fleet safety protocols, driver safety training, and risk mitigation strategies across owned/leased assets.

  • Drive the adoption, maintenance, and optimization of Transportation Management Systems (TMS), telematics, and visibility platforms.

  • Leverage freight data analytics and business intelligence tools to track performance trends, forecast capacity needs, and automate workflows.

At a minimum you'll need:

  • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration, or a related field.

  • 8+ years of progressive management experience in transportation, fleet management, or logistics operations.

  • Minimum 4+ years in a senior leadership or directorial capacity managing cross-functional teams.

  • Hands-on experience with enterprise Transportation Management Systems (TMS) (e.g., MercuryGate, Oracle TMS, SAP Transportation Management, Blue Yonder) and ERP platforms (SAP, Workday, or Oracle).

  • Deep expertise in DOT regulations, carrier contract negotiation, freight pricing models, and multi-modal transportation.

It'd be great if you also have:

  • Master's degree (MBA or M.S. in Supply Chain/Logistics).

  • Professional certifications such as APICS CSCP, CLTD, or Six Sigma Green/Black Belt.

  • Experience managing both private dedicated fleets and 3PL/4PL network
