POSITION SUMMARY:

The Transportation Mechanic for the school district is responsible for ensuring the safety and reliability of the district's bus fleet. This role includes repairing defects identified on driver turn-in sheets, conducting 30-day inspections at schools and bus staging areas, performing preventative maintenance, and servicing major vehicle components, sub-assemblies, and tires. The mechanic also performs road checks and participates in service vehicle maintenance and operation. The position requires the ability to resolve moderately complex issues independently, while more challenging problems may be escalated to a supervisor. The primary goal of the Transportation Mechanic is to maintain all assigned vehicles in compliance with state and local safety standards, ensuring they are in safe and dependable operating condition.

CERTIFICATE/LICENSE & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Responds to calls regarding bus breakdowns or accidents. Upon arrival, assesses the situation to determine whether the bus can be repaired on-site and returned to service within a reasonable timeframe. If possible, the mechanic replaces necessary parts or components using the service van's inventory and restores the bus to operational status. If towing is required, the mechanic arranges for the safe transport of students and completes form TD-18A to document the incident.
• Participates in the maintenance and operation of service vehicles. This includes performing maintenance services according to the Preventative Maintenance Vehicle Replacement Manual and ensuring that vehicles in the transportation department's service fleet are operated safely and efficiently.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of school bus and vehicle operation and maintenance to include diesel engines.
• Knowledge of different mechanical, air, hydraulic, and electrical systems used on transportation equipment
• Knowledge of proper operation and use of shop equipment
• Crafts skills such as automotive electric, heating and air conditioning to maintain and repair school vehicles
• Coordinating skills such as scheduling for vehicle maintenance and recordkeeping skills to maintain accurate maintenance records
• Analytical skills to diagnose vehicle malfunction
• Communication skills to communicate with school bus drivers, principals, and outside vendors
• Computer skills to operate computerized diagnostic equipment; troubleshooting engine or electrical problems with laptop computer
• Manual skills to perform manual tasks associated with engine maintenance, tire replacement, and vehicle body repair
• Mechanical skills to drive bus, wrecker, fuel truck, and forklift and to maintain and repair above equipment
• Planning skills to schedule necessary repairs along with routine preventative maintenance
• Repairs and replaces damaged vehicle body parts
• Test electrical systems and makes necessary repairs
• Removes, replaces and reassembles transmissions; fuel, oil, and water pumps; alternators and other parts of the engine and suspension system
• Requires the ability to read a variety of correspondence, reports, forms, logs, lists, etc. Requires the ability to prepare correspondence, reports, forms, lists, etc. using prescribed formats.

• Work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities.
• Work regularly requires working near moving and mechanical parts, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires exposure to fumes.
• Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment and machinery including trucks, wreckers, tire changing machines, hydraulic lifts, etc.
