Job summary

Thomas & Hutton is seeking a Transportation Designer - Engineer in Training to contribute to roadway and transportation design projects in the Southeast. You will work with mentors, gain hands-on experience, and grow within a Best Place to Work environment.

The role requires a Civil Engineering degree and 3+ years of transportation design experience, with MicroStation V8, InRoads/GEOPAK, and CAD proficiency. EIT is preferred; on-site schedule with comprehensive benefits is provided.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering and 3+ years in transportation design.
  • EIT certification preferred.
  • Proficiency with MicroStation V8 and InRoads or GEOPAK.
  • Strong reading and interpretation of engineering plans.
  • Experience with MS Office and ability to communicate clearly.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare drawings, layouts, and exhibits per GDOT/SC DOT guidelines.
  • Perform geometric calculations and estimate quantities using CADD tools.
  • Assist design of roadway projects and related infrastruture plans.
  • Coordinate with project managers and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Produce and refine design files ensuring accuracy and standards.
  • Support transportation projects as assigned by supervisor.

Transportation Designer - Engineer in Training

What you'll do
  • Prepare construction drawings, layouts, and exhibits in accordance with GDOT Plan Presentation Guide & Electronic Data Guidelines and/or SCDOT plan preparation guidelines
  • Perform geometric calculations and estimate construction quantities using CADD tools
  • Assist with the design and development of transportation improvement projects, including roadway and related infrastructure plans
  • Coordinate regularly with project managers and multidisciplinary teams to support project delivery
  • Produce and refine design files, ensuring accuracy, quality, and adherence to project standards
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor to support transportation projects
What you bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering
  • 3+ years of experience working on transportation design projects
  • EIT certification preferred
  • Strong working knowledge of MicroStation V8 and InRoads or GEOPAK
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software
  • Ability to read engineering plans and perform basic calculations
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience with AutoCAD and Civil 3D is a plus
