In this position, you will take on the role of Inspector-In-Charge for a highway construction project that involves a limited range of work operations, or you may serve as an assistant on a larger project by overseeing specific tasks. Your responsibilities will include supervising the inspection of materials and workmanship to ensure they meet contract requirements and adhere to established standards and specifications. You will be tasked with verifying cuts and fills, checking elevation grades, and overseeing the staking of structures, as well as supervising the inspection and placement of all materials used in the project. Additionally, you will interpret contract requirements for both the contractor and your subordinates, guiding them in sampling, testing, and inspection techniques. Your role will also involve making calculations and sketches to assist in resolving any field issues that arise, while ensuring the preparation of reports and the maintenance of necessary records. Participation in constructability reviews and scheduling meetings will be required, along with the timely completion of assignments. You will compile and draft documentation for work order justifications, prepare and submit work orders and construction estimates, and track material certifications to confirm that all materials used in the project are certified and meet specifications. Furthermore, you will assist the Assistant Construction Manager or Assistant Construction Engineer in making field decisions that may involve altering plans, quantities, methods of work, and construction completion dates. Your ability to interpret project designs and plans will be crucial in providing technical guidance to resolve discrepancies and ensure that the project is executed as intended. Effective communication with both internal and external stakeholders will be essential, as you will need to convey expectations and concerns, collaborate with other project engineers to address issues, and coordinate staffing, equipment, and information. Keeping your supervisor and staff informed about significant project developments and upcoming operations will also be part of your duties. Lastly, you will play a key role in developing your subordinates by planning training and development activities, while also planning, assigning, prioritizing, and evaluating their work. This includes interviewing and selecting employees, assessing their performance, and making decisions regarding their promotions or disciplinary actions.
