DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As a Transportation Construction Inspector, you will be assisting the District Permit Supervisor to ensure correspondence, reviews, and inspections meet all applicable standards and regulations. Work involves inspecting materials; providing compaction testing; documenting permit work; and assisting with checking grades, elevations, as well as structure and roadway stake-outs with contractors or surveyors. In this role, you will also be responsible for interpreting plans, standards, and specifications submitted by applicants and their engineers, architects, or consultants for all types of highway construction. You will have the opportunity to conduct field views of permitted work to verify completeness in accordance with the permit and department regulations. This requires documentation of acceptance or notifying the supervisor and/or permittee of deficiencies. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Identifying violations and compiling corrective action plans
  • Attending hearings to provide testimony on behalf of the department
  • Attending meetings with township, borough, and utility officials to interpret and explain department specifications
  • Identifying drainage needs
  • Reviewing complaints and assisting to resolve problems

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
    • Work schedule may be subject to change due to weather, seasonally, and/or based on operational needs.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time (ad-hoc), per supervisor's discretion. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Bridgeville.
  • Salary:Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $44,890 (before taxes).

Required Experience, Training & Eligibility

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year as an Engineering Technician (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration);or
  • Two years as a Transportation Technician or Construction Cost Technician 1 (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration);or
  • Three years of experience in highway or bridge surveying, design, construction, or inspection work; or
  • Three years of experience in quality control of materials or building or construction industry experience, which includes reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, or schematics; or
  • One year of construction inspection experience, and an associate’s degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, geotechnical engineering, surveying engineering technology, or a closely related engineering technology; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:

  • This position requires possession of an active non-commercial Pennsylvania Class C Driver’s License or equivalent.
