The Department of Transportation is actively looking to hire a Transportation Construction Inspector who will undertake a range of technical responsibilities related to the inspection of materials and workmanship on highway construction projects within Engineering District 1-0. This role is crucial in ensuring that all construction activities adhere to the established codes, plans, standards, and specifications. In this position, you will be responsible for inspecting all aspects of transportation construction activities. This includes assisting in verifying grades, elevations, and the layout of structures and roadways in collaboration with contractors and surveyors. You will also oversee the proper placement of various materials, such as cement concrete, bituminous concrete, and drainage components, ensuring compliance with project specifications. Additionally, you will conduct visual non-movement compaction testing on sub-surface layers, soils, and aggregates. Your role will involve engaging with department personnel, as well as federal, state, and local agencies, legislators, and the public to facilitate effective project management. You will be tasked with maintaining a master diary, performing mathematical calculations, estimating item quantities and project costs, and documenting all relevant project information, whether manually or electronically. Furthermore, you will assist in troubleshooting field issues, compile photographic evidence, prepare sketches, and create inspection review summaries. As part of the inspection team, you will document and verify contractor work in accordance with the Project Office Manual and Publication 408, while generating necessary reports to monitor project progress and schedules. You will track material quantities and testing results using both manual and computerized methods, draw sketches to note field plan modifications, and maintain comprehensive inspection and quality control reports. It is essential to ensure that all projects adhere to existing regulations, policies, and procedures, executed efficiently and cost-effectively. You will also be required to attend environmental training sessions and implement best practices in environmental stewardship. Additional responsibilities may include performing related duties on highway construction projects as assigned, as well as fulfilling tasks designated by your supervisor during winter assignments.
