Job summary

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is seeking a Transportation Construction Inspector to help ensure materials used in major transportation projects meet stringent standards. You will inspect asphalt, concrete, and aggregates, verify testing procedures, and review documentation to support quality assurance.

You will also calibrate equipment, monitor supplier compliance, and provide field support at plants and job sites while adhering to state regulations and safety requirements.

Qualifications

The Transportation Construction Inspector position with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) offers an exciting opportunity to support quality construction across the region. This position focuses on inspecting materials, verifying testing procedures, and ensuring compliance with construction standards at various production plants. As a Transportation Construction Inspector, you will perform the following duties:

• Material Inspection: Inspect asphalt, concrete, and aggregate materials to ensure they meet specifications and quality control plans
• Testing Verification: Observe technicians performing tests and confirm accuracy of procedures and results
• Documentation Review: Record sampling methods, testing results, and compliance issues in required systems
• Quality Assurance: Check supplier compliance with standards, verify documentation, and support annual inspections
• Equipment Calibration: Verify calibration of equipment used by both department staff and vendors
• Field Support: Assist with core drilling, project material reviews, and sampling activities at job sites

Work Schedule and Additional Information

• Full-time employment
• Work hours are 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
• Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in King of Prussia. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $46,827.00 (before taxes).

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements

• One year as an Engineering Technician (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
• Two years as a Transportation Technician or Construction Cost Technician 1 (Commonwealth job titles or equivalent Federal Government job titles, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
• Three years of experience in highway or bridge surveying, design, construction, or inspection work; or
• Three years of experience in quality control of materials or building or construction industry experience, which includes reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, or schematics; or
• One year of construction inspection experience, and an associate’s degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, geotechnical engineering, surveying engineering technology, or a closely related engineering technology; or
• An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirement

• This position requires possession of an active non-commercial Pennsylvania Class C Driver’s License or equivalent.
