Job summary

Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Department of Transportation is seeking a Transportation Technician in Dauphin County to support construction inspection and project documentation, ensuring highway work meets standards. You will observe construction phases, review materials, track activities, and assist field operations, with travel to PennDOT District 8-0 sites across Adams, Cumberland, Franklin, York, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, and Perry Counties.

Work hours 7:00 AM–3:00 PM, Monday to Friday.

Qualifications

• One year of highway or bridge surveying, design, construction, or inspection work.
• One year of quality control of materials or construction industry experience including reading blueprints.
• Equivalent combination of experience and training.

This position supports construction inspection and project documentation to help ensure that highway work meets required standards. It involves reviewing materials, tracking project activities, and assisting with field operations. As a Transportation Technician, you will perform the following duties:

• Construction Inspection: Observe routine phases of highway construction and check grades, elevations, and stakeout work
• Material Review: Examine materials and testing results to confirm consistency with contract requirements
• Traffic Control Check: Inspect work zone signs and devices to ensure proper placement and maintenance
• Project Documentation: Maintain reports, sketches, diaries, and digital records related to construction activities
• Field Coordination: Support plant operations, material testing, and enforcement of contract specifications
• Contract Interpretation: Explain department requirements and testing procedures to contractors during project work

Work Schedule and Additional Information

• Full-time employment
• Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
• You will work closely with vendors and work hours may change based on vendor availability.
• This position is based in Dauphin County and requires travel to project field offices within PennDOT District 8-0, including Adams, Cumberland, Franklin, York, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, and Perry Counties.
• Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements

• One year of experience in highway or bridge surveying, design, construction, or inspection work; or
• One year of experience in quality control of materials or building or construction industry experience, which includes reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, or schematics; or
• An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Other Requirements

• This particular position requires possession of a valid Class C Driver's License.
