Job description

Here’s The Role

As a Transmission System Operator, you’ll play a critical role in maintaining the reliability and stability of the LCRA transmission grid! This isn’t just a job; it’s a frontline role in powering communities and supporting critical infrastructure. In this role, you will perform routine engineering analysis and calculations for real‑time line loading and load flow functions to respond to system changes. From real‑time system operation and control to emergency restoration, your decisions directly impact public safety, economic continuity, and grid resilience!

Work Environment & Expectations – This is a 24/7 operation and includes rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays. It is primarily control‑room based, sedentary work with frequent finger/hand manipulation due to computer keyboard and mouse use with occasional field training. It is a highly demanding, high responsibility role that requires sustained attention and quick response time. You will work around high‑voltage systems with appropriate safety protocols and protective equipment.

How You’ll Contribute
  • Monitor and control transmission and substation systems via SCADA to maintain reliability, voltage profiles, and equipment loading within limits.
  • Respond to system events and alarms, taking real‑time action to protect grid integrity.
  • Load service restoration efforts by coordinating switching actions and dispatching field personnel.
  • Develop, review, and execute switching orders to support safe maintenance and system operations.
  • Coordinate with neighboring utilities, customers, and ERCOT to ensure aligned and reliable operations, including support of emergency operations, including load shedding and Black Start restoration when required.
  • Track and document system activity, outages, and events in operator logs.
  • Use tools like Energy Management Systems (EMS), Integrated Tool for Operations Application (iTOA), and one‑line diagrams to assess system conditions and guide decisions.
How You’re Qualified
  • Four or more years’ experience in real‑time operation and control of electric transmission and/or distribution systems, transmission equipment field operations or power plant operations, or other relevant experience.
  • A degree(s) in electrical engineering technology, electrical technology, electronics or relevant field may be substituted per LCRA guidelines for certain years of experience.
  • Fluent in the English language.
  • NERC System Operator Certification or equivalent.
How You’ll Stand Out
  • Commitment to safety, operational excellence, and continuous learning. Strong understanding of transmission systems, electrical fundamentals, and grid operations.
  • Effective communicator who can coordinate clearly across teams and external partners, with the ability to analyze complex, fast‑moving situations and make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Skilled in interpreting one‑line diagrams, system data, and operating procedures.
  • Working knowledge of EMS/SCADA systems and real‑time grid monitoring tools.
  • Familiarity with ERCOT protocols and NERC reliability standards including ERCOT Energy Emergency Alerts (EEA).
  • Ability to work and stay attentive throughout a twelve‑hour shift on weekends, holidays, and non‑standard hours at a sit/stand workstation. Work involves frequent finger/hand manipulation in using a keyboard and mouse.
