Job summary

AES is offering a student internship in Dayton, Ohio focused on power system analysis and transmission planning. You will work with engineers to perform steady-state, dynamic, and short-circuit studies using tools like PSS®E and DSA Tools, contributing to regulatory data processes and system studies.

You will gain exposure to MISO and PJM markets, participate in site visits, and collaborate with regulatory experts, gaining practical experience in a large electric utility environment.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems.
• Coursework in power systems, circuits, or electric machines.
• Problem-solving mindset and willingness to learn.
• Ability to communicate clearly, verbally and in writing.
• Exposure to power-flow or short-circuit software (PSS-E, TARA, ASPEN, CAPE, DSA Tools, or similar) highly desired.
• Familiarity with the NERC/FERC/PJM/MISO regulatory landscape highly desired.

Responsibilities

• Support steady-state power-flow and short-circuit studies using PSS®E, TARA, and DSA Tools.
• Assist with transmission interconnection and reactive-compensation studies for new large load and generation.
• Build and maintain steady-state, dynamics, and short-circuit representations of the AES transmission system.
• Support NERC modeling data processes, including MOD-032 data collection and FAC-008 facility ratings.
• Validate models against actual system performance.
• Gain exposure to transmission operations planning, outage coordination, and RTO submission systems including MISO CROW and PJM eDART.
• Learn AES operations within the MISO and PJM markets and the NERC/FERC regulatory framework.
• Attend site visits to substations and other facilities.
• Collaborate with engineers, technicians, and regulatory experts.
• Participate in AES-specific learning opportunities and networking events.
• Engage in discussions to identify ways AES can better prepare for the future of energy.
