Job summary

AES Corporation is a leading US-based power company seeking a Transmission Planning Engineer Intern to contribute to developing and testing transmission solutions within the MISO and PJM markets. You will gain hands-on exposure to analysis, modeling, and operations in a collaborative setting.

As an intern, you will perform steady-state studies, assist with interconnection analyses, and help maintain system models while learning regulatory frameworks and AES operations in real-time market

Qualifications

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or related field.
  • Coursework in power systems, circuits, or electric machines.
  • Problem-solving mindset and willingness to learn.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, verbally and in writing.

Responsibilities

  • Support steady-state power-flow and short-circuit studies using PSSE, TARA, and DSA Tools.
  • Assist with transmission interconnection and reactive-compensation studies for large load and generation.
  • Help build and maintain steady-state, dynamics, and short-circuit representations of the AES transmission system, keeping base cases current.
  • Support NERC modeling data processes - MOD-032 data collection, FAC-008 facility ratings - and model validation against actual system performance.
  • Gain exposure to transmission operations planning, outage coordination, and RTO submission systems (MISO CROW, PJM eDART).
  • Learn how AES works within the MISO and PJM markets and the NERC/FERC regulatory framework.
  • Attend site visits to substations and other facilities to see transmission infrastructure firsthand.
  • Work in an agile, collaborative environment, partnering with engineers, technicians, and regulatory experts to solve complex problems.
  • Participate in formalized AES-specific learning opportunities to further your knowledge toward accelerating the responsible energy transition.
  • Network with peers, AES leaders, and like-minded employees through dedicated events, lunch-and-learns, and speaker series.
  • Actively engage in open discussions to help identify ways AES can better prepare for the future of energy.

As a Transmission Planning Engineer Intern you will be working in the Transmission Planning group to develop and test solutions that improve future transmission system reliability and capacity. You will gain exposure to analysis, modeling and operations and see how planning studies, system models, and operations coordination work together within the MISO and PJM markets.

As a Transmission Planning intern you will:

  • Support steady-state power-flow and short-circuit studies using industry tools such as PSSE, TARA, and DSA Tools
  • Assist with transmission interconnection and reactive-compensation studies for new large load and generation
  • Help build and maintain the steady-state, dynamics, and short-circuit representations of the AES transmission system, keeping base cases current with topology, equipment, and rating changes
  • Support NERC modeling data processes - MOD-032 data collection, FAC-008 facility ratings - and model validation against actual system performance
  • Gain exposure to transmission operations planning, outage coordination, and RTO submission systems (MISO CROW, PJM eDART)
  • Learn how AES works within the MISO and PJM markets and the NERC/FERC regulatory framework

Requirements:
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a related field
  • Coursework in power systems, circuits, or electric machines
  • Problem-solving mindset and willingness to learn
  • Ability to communicate clearly, verbally and in writing
Highly Desired:
  • Exposure to power-flow or short-circuit software (PSSE, TARA, ASPEN, CAPE, DSA Tools, or similar)
  • Familiarity with the NERC/FERC/PJM/MISO regulatory landscape
  • Coursework or project experience in power system analysis
